  1. Parallel PHEV and rapid charging

    General EV Discussion
You can change every question I asked to be a moral rather than a legal issue. Why would a well-driven Mercedes with an empty petrol tank, that is only being used within its electric range, be morally less deserving of green power, or be (in your words) less in need, than a badly-driven BMW with...
  2. Halogen vs LED Headlight Comparison

    Kia Niro
Would really need to do that for a good comparison I think.
  3. Parallel PHEV and rapid charging

    General EV Discussion
My thoughts: We cannot expect ordinary users to be expert enough to select which charging point they should use with their car to optimise overall efficiency for charging other cars. Rules that say certain drivers should be punished for attempting to use certain chargers will only inhibit the...
  4. Halogen vs LED Headlight Comparison

    Kia Niro
Out of interest, did you fix the exposure and colour balance in the camera and keep them unchanged while filming these videos?
  5. Single-speed Automatic

    General EV Discussion
This is just annoying me. Looked at lots of videos on lots of cars by lots of different reviewers and all of them used the phrase "single-speed automatic gearbox". What in all that is good and evil is that? How do you automatically change what is unchangeable? EVs are not usually direct drive I...
  6. New EV noise laws 1st July

    General EV Discussion
If AVAS has no benefit then let's not do it. I do not know the statistics I am afraid, so cannot comment. I would assume that if the figure were actually even 5% then it would still be worth doing. Personally, I would set the threshold according to whether it reduced injury rather than just...
  7. New EV noise laws 1st July

    General EV Discussion
AVAS systems do not have to be loud. They will still be quieter than the majority of ICE cars. The sound they make will be narrowband and lack the objectionable low frequencies emitted by ICE vehicles, notably diesels. When cars leave in the morning it will still be ICE units that wake...
  8. Ecotricity MegaThread

    General Charging Discussion
Sounds like an idea to me Russ.
  9. Ecotricity MegaThread

    General Charging Discussion
I have only seen other PHEV cars at Ecotricity chargers. Now I am sure that many, many electric cars charge there too it is just that the only ones I have had next to me over the last year have all been other PHEVs. I guess that means that at least a few uses of the free chargers has been by...
  10. Polar introduce £1.20 charge for FREE charging ?! from 1 Dec

    General Charging Discussion
Good point about the grants Paul. It looks like really poor product (service) management backed up by lousy marketing. No notice to customers, forcing rather than encouraging behaviour and being prepared to kill their reputation all speaks of incompetence. A smaller point but it is mad to not...
  11. Polar introduce £1.20 charge for FREE charging ?! from 1 Dec

    General Charging Discussion
No. I did not receive any mail either and so the charge I received recently was a complete surprise. Frankly this is an awful way for a business to behave. Interesting that some are suggesting that the Polar business is in trouble as that explanation would fit with the feeling of desperation...
  12. It's not just about braking

    Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
I think the two things are exclusive; when you have cruise control on then the regen level is set for you and the paddles don't change anything. When you turn cruise control off again then the regen level is left at level 2 if I remember correctly.
  13. Does Charging Have to be This Painful?

    General Charging Discussion
I don't think the Tesla is an unreasonable price Paul. I mean it is a lot of money but not compared to other cars of a similar performance, fit-out and so on. Not sure that just because Tesla gets it right means that others have to get it wrong though. I would like to see others to do a good...
  14. Home Charging Installation in UK

    General Charging Discussion
So all the 32A home-charging points eligible for a subsidy in the UK cost around £195 - after the subsidy is taken off that is. After discussing with one installer I got some idea how their installation would look. The electricity would come from my fuse box and the point would then be attached...
  15. Does Charging Have to be This Painful?

    General Charging Discussion
Charged my car today at the supermarket. I am based in the UK by-the-way. The charging points are free which is great but they are on the Chargemaster/Polar system. There are four sockets on two posts. It was a nasty experience and here's why; Arrived to find all points free but a temporary...
  16. Securing charging cables

    Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
    An interesting point.
  17. Securing charging cables

    Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
I have only used two charging points so far. One locked the plug into the charger while the other was simply a type ii socket in a post with a switch to turn it on - so no locking. Thanks for the tip about the padlock Peter. I had a spare one of about the right size so I tried it last night...
  18. Charging the auxiliary battery

    Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
Fascinating. I'm surprised the aux battery seems normal size then and not a bit smaller. Thanks for all of the info MP. This has to be the most different car I have ever driven.
  19. Securing charging cables

    Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
Nice feature. I will take a look.
  20. Securing charging cables

    Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
Is it supposed to? To be honest I'm not sure. It doesn't lock the 13A cable - which uses the same plug.
