I'm loving the car overall and I'm very happy with the build quality and interior, however I have a couple of niggly bugs that I wondered if others have seen.

Firstly, the radio occasionally switches to a random other band - I normally have it on 6music on DAB. This happens about once in every 10 starts at start up. On a couple of occasions it has lost the tone settings too.

Secondly, it has more recently started to sound the seat belt warning chime when there is no passenger in the seat. The only way to stop it is to reach across and fasten the belt. This happens about one time in 3.

I have seen the randon radio channel thing. We normally have it on a DAB station and occasionally we power up the car and it comes on to an FM channel but we haven't yet set up any FM channels so it is just static.

We thought it might have been the fact that you can have different set ups for each key fob but I think we can rule that out as I have been the only one to drive the car and I have my own fob.

Interesting.

You probably have the setting to automatically switch to FM when DAB too poor setting turned on. This works well if it's radio 2 as there is an FM version but not for your chosen station.

It has switched to AM too, though. And it doesn't explain the tone settings. Also, the first time it did it, it also lost the favourites.

We've had our favourites once too although it was just once and it hasn't happened since. We just put it down to the key fob thing or not properly understanding how to set it up properly although since then we now realise that we did nothing wrong.

If it happens again then I think I might have to report it. It is hardly the end of the world but it is very annoying having to set them all up again.

I had another variant today: It started playing the CD in the drive although I haven't listed to it for a few days (and starts).

I had another one yesterday...

Was listening to Radio 5 Live on DAB when the radio switched to 5 Live Sports Extra, the button next to 5 Live... without me touching the screen!

So I reselected 5 Live and it wouldn't switch. Tried going to another station which it did, then back to 5 Live but it actually played Sports Extra. Tried going to FM and back again... no luck. So it was playing 5 Live Sports extra on both the Sports extra button and the 5 Live button.

In an "out of the box" moment I decided to press and hold the 5 Live button and lo and behold it switched to 5 Live and normal service resumed.

Very wierd

I suspect that the radio decided to switch to another channel on the multiplex due to data errors. This is the default configuration of the DAB radio. I changed mine on delivery so this has never occured.

It is documented on page 24 of the infotainment manual and is called "Auto ensemble linking" If you switch this off it will not (or at least should not) switch to another channel.

[The signal strength is per multiplex, but it is possible that channel B could be using a different bit rate and error correction to channel A - so one can be decoded and not the other. I think this is more likely in Europe where some channels are DAB+ although it isn't clear that the Opel Ampera has DAB+ (there is debate on the German forum!)]

One thing that I find rather a pain with respect to the radio is that on DAB you have to switch to a separate page to see the radio text i.e. to see what is currently playing whereas on FM it is in the radio display. It may be because of the size of the text that can be sent but there needs to be a much more user friendly and useful way of getting at the text.

To see the text you have to get to the DAB menu then select Radio text and then to get back you have to use the "back" option twice. A bit of a pain IMHO.

Agreed.

Now, on the subject of the random radio resets, I think I can isolate it to cases where you turn the car off and then fairly quicky turn it on again. By that, I mean around 2 minutes. I've not timed it scientifically though.

I think I would agree with that as I too have noticed some anomalies when turning the car back on shortly after turning it off.

Would it be the 10 minute time-out where everything is turned off regardless.

I had the situation once where I could not get rid of the traffic announcement screen, Turning the car off/on did nothing it was only after a cup of coffee that things worked so about 20 minutes anyway longer than 10.

That just happened to me today. When I went to put the car in the garage it had mysteriously switched to Radio 1 and lost most of the favourites: the first page was untouched (though since I hadn't changed any of the settings on that page they could be factory set for all I know), the second page had BBC Oxford (FM) still there on the first button. All the other buttons (I had set them to DAB stations) had reset to the original FM frequencies.

I've got the model without navigation BTW.

I was speaking to the Ampera specialist at Poole when my car went in and mentoned the radio bug. He said "is it the changing to FM thing?" so it seems Vauxhall know about it. I hope that prompts an update.

I think I might try to do a definitive list of bugs that can be fixed with a software update, features that can be improved with a software update and features that can only be improved in a future model year.

I can think of nothing at this time that I have as an issue that could not be fixed with a software update - at least if the whole implementation has been done properly with updates in mind I assume that all the important data is on the protected part of the hard drive we cannot access.

It definitely seems to have done a spontaneous factory reset of the radio: today I noticed the traffic volume had also gone back to its default (loud) setting.

I seem to be getting the tone controls reset bug more frequently these days. This is bl00dy anoying as it's difficult to get it back exactly as you'd want it.

However, last night I had a new variant. I stopped for a splash of petrol and on starting up the car had gone metric, including all the info on th energy efficiency screen in l/100km. Fiddling with the config menus and hitting 'personalisation' then caused the screen to reboot for some reason and it came back normal, but that is bizarre.

Vauxhall need to get a grip on this stuff.

Yup... the software is absolutely rubbish and as an expereinced software developer it smacks of a lack of testing and the office junior being given the cose to write.

It is truly the biggest aspect of the car that lets it down IMO. The good thing is that it is the easiest thing to fix... if they could be bothered to do so.
