If anyone gets a 'Check Engine' light and wants to see what the actual error code is themselves, or you want to see what your engine oil temperature is, or you simply want to play with LOADS of other geeky fun stuff, you can access your car's hidden menu this way.

First, get the last 5 digits of your car's VIN number from the panel at the bottom of the windscreen, passenger side. Add them together and remember the sum total (for example: 98175 = 9+8+1+7+5 = 30)

Then in the car, with ignition on, press and hold the trip reset button for about 10-12 seconds. Ignore the engine oil reset question and keep the button pressed until the menu appears. This will NOT reset your trip meter.

When the menu appears in the dash, cycle through the options in sequence by pressing the trip reset button. Holding the trip reset for 2 seconds allows you to enter and exit menus. To access the full menu, select the 'unlock' option and then enter the sum total of the last 5 digits of your car's VIN, then press the trip reset button for 2 seconds.

This video shows the process and is worth a watch before you do this, so you can see how the process works (it's only 3 minutes):
