Hi Folks,

I thought I'd track the availability of apps for the Polestar 2. I'll keep this updated.

This will be a big help, thanks. Out of interest where are you getting the information?

I note that these are all 'media' apps of one sort or another.

I look forward to seeing a wider variety - things like Waze or even ABRP or ZapMap.

Is Android System WebView a generic web browser? Are we likely to see Chrome in here at some point?

It's the internal browser that would be used by apps that need to embed a browser, eg for presenting a login window, that kind of thing.

I use Android Auto extensively on my IPace. I can dictate/receive WhatsApp messages and today even got a Telegram notification from my Home Assistant setup come up on the display
Hopefully there will be these existing capabilites on the P2 Android system.

I did wonder if the Google Assistant in the Polestar 2 will be able to do anything with IFTTT or other smart home services so as the car is approaching home, turn on the lights/heating etc. I know BMW support this.

There is no Android Auto support at all, so until someone makes an Android Automotive Telegram / WhatsApp client, you will not be able to do any of this.

This is what has annoyed me about the promise of CarPlay, then the delay till next year, then some smug PR on Twitter telling me I'd be able to 'use all the features of my phone' when that quite clearly isn't the case.

By the way, ironically, at least CarPlay support has been promised whereas Android Auto hasn't even been mentioned.

Can confirm this works. Using the simulator, I can do stuff in my home via the 'car'. I didn't have much time, so all I tried was turning my garden lights off and on!

New App : Google Assistant now appears as an 'app' in the Play Store and there was an update waiting. Not sure if any significant change to functionality. It now shows news headlines but I can't work out how to add anything else there. It doesn't reflect the same view I see on the phone anyway (weather / upcoming appointments etc).

Updates : Pocket Casts, YouTube Music and ARD Audiothek

No obvious changes. Maps app is still showing inappropriate chargers (Tesla / CHAdeMO). That's one thing I'm closely watching as it really is a stupid problem that needs solving ASAP.

Reported on InsideEVs

Polestar has a solid infotainment OS, other brands want it too.

The PSA Group briefly announced that from 2023 its new cars will be equipped with infotainment systems with Android Automotive OS, Google’s open-source platform for vehicles.

As the partnership just begins, PSA will need some time to implement Android on its cars (including Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Opel/Vauxhall brands).

The first with on-board Android is Polestar with its Polestar 2 (which already has received high notes for its infotainment in the initial batch of reviews), and soon also Volvo.

General Motors is expected to start using Android Automotive OS from 2021 in Chevrolet and Cadillac brands (Cadillac Lyriq would be an obvious candidate).

Since the PSA Group is merging with FCA (the combined company will be named STELLANTIS), we would be not surprised if FCA would also join the Android bandwagon.

The main thing about the switch to the Android OS by so many brands in barely a few years (probably more to come) is that it will change the software landscape, also in the EV segment.

I Think this is good news...

Cheers

Phil

How are you seeing the chargers on the map? I have the emulator running but there's seemingly no charger info etc? If I plan a route from London to Scotland it just routes me straight to scotland without stopping?

Yes, it doesn't seem to automatically look for chargers - I don't know if this is a configuration issue with the emulator.

But you can manually look for chargers along your route by hitting the search icon in the bottom cluster of four icons whilst navigation is active.
