It's true in summary the IDs behave like this:

  • D and eco drive mode, intelligent regen is enabled the car tells you when to lift of the accelerator and will automatically adjust the regen depending on the road, I find this disconcerting as the car goes faster than I would like especially at roundabouts but it is what VW recommends and is probably the most efficient
  • D and normal drive mode, no regen unless the brake is pressed, it uses the motor regen first and then if more force is called for than the motor can provide it uses the actual brakes
  • D and sport drive mode or B mode selected the car blends in the regen once the accelerator is no longer pressed down enough to maintain momentum, if you take your foot off the regen kicks in quite sharply but maybe not as much as others, obviously this depends on temperature and charge % (sorry feel like that might be a bit teaching granny to suck eggs)
I prefer D mode in normal, I lift off early and if I want to slow down quicker I use the brake pedal. The only thing that annoys me is if I want the extra oomph of sport mode then it acts as though it's in B mode by default, it's really annoying if you change modes whilst driving and your foot isn't on the accelerator!
I’d not really used “D” until today snd was pleasantly surprised, it wasn’t what I expected. I had it set in normal drive (comfort) and “D”. I think it suites my driving style better than B, but I need to play more to be sure. I note that you say that in normal and D, there’s no regen unless brake is pressed. This wasn’t my experience, regen was definitely far less, but I definitely saw the regen green bar moving on occasions. Not sure if there’s other settings I need to change or if it’s perhaps just another anomaly of my naughty car.

Yeah I agree, when in D and Comfort, which is what I think we are referring to as Normal, there is definitely predictive regen going on.

That might be due to the smart settings, which
It does do that but it's not limited to just that. For example, It will start to apply regen braking if you're approaching a roundabout.
As mentioned above, I believe those are additional "smart" features that can be turned off in the settings. If you have those off, set to "Comfort" mode, and drive in "D" I beieve the car will drive as you wish - no automatic regen at all, just coasting (though still braking regeneratively). I haven't tried turning those features off, as I rather like them, but I believe you can.

If you look at ‘Assist’ you will probably see that ‘Eco Assistance’ is selected. This implements intelligent regen in D mode. Remove the selection if you want D with no regen.

I’m a D mode man myself! I actually think it’s one of the best features of the ID.3, the predictive regen stuff. I find that it almost always knows when I want regen and when I don’t. When you need it, the predictive regen in D mode gives you more regen than B mode seems to, then when you don’t need it the car just coasts… best of both worlds!

I’m always shouting at the screen in YouTube reviews of the ID.3 when they bemoan it not having ‘one pedal driving’, thinking “you don’t need it anymore! VW moved the game on! Now it knows when you need regen and when you don’t… it has magic regen, so forget all the old-fangled one pedal stuff and move with the times YouTube person!!”

Bit of a tip, the mechanical brakes don't kick in until the green bar is full.

I personally like the predective regen, it allows you to coast in traffic when the traffic around you doesn't keep to a constant speed. It also does a good job of stopping you from unintentionally tailgating and getting all the stonechips from the wally in front who likes to drive in the gutter or centre of the lanes.

For when the predictive regen gets it wrong, just prod the accelerator gently through the regen phase and that switches it off until the next opportunity to regen.

Forgot about that bit I think it was one of the first things I switched off  I might have another go with the 'Eco Assistance' now I've had the 2.1 update and see if I can get on with it.

This was a bit I found hard... the car would predict differently to me, so I'd use the accelerator. Then when I expected the predictive regeneration to kick on, it didn't because I'd accidentally overridden it a few seconds earlier.

Are you... praising... VW? :D
If, sir, you went through my back catalogue of posts you’d find just as many posts where I’ve spoken in glowing terms about the ID.3 as those where I’ve been critical.

I view the ID.3 as an in some ways brilliant, but in other ways flawed product. And I do believe it is quite possible that one day all those flaws will be fixed making it a wholly brilliant product.

And because I express both sides of my overall opinion on here, I get accused of being an ID.3 fanboi and of bashing the ID.3 in fairly equal measure 😂

Curious if the ID.3 behaves differently on 'D' vs 'B' mode for ACC. My Golf GTE does - in 'D' mode it coasts for longer then goes fairly hard on the brakes if it needs to slow down to maintain the gap, whereas in 'B' mode it regens immediately. I think this would make 'D' slightly more efficient, but there is probably not that much in it for a longer trip.

Q on the ID3 intelligence.....
When I had my GTE I preferred B on wet / busy motorways over D, and now with the Kona I am a region zero fan most of the time, but using the manual regen settings again on busy wet fast roads.

Reasoning + query
on a motorway if you have and you lift off, the intelligence does not know why, doesn't know what you've seen ahead ( obs an intelligent cruise control will , if it's slowing traffic etc)
With D, the car coasts and there's a lag whilst you finishing lifting the foot off, move it over, and begin pressing the brake pedal
With B the slowing effect is started as soon as you start to lift the foot upwards off of the Go Pedal

I kinda like the few extra moments of slowing that the second approach gives me.

What does the ID3 do, if the cruise control isn't on ?

In D, it coasts.*

In B, it slows as regen is applied.

That’s when ACC isn’t on, which is how I drive mine now anyway.

*If in D, and you’ve still got the predictive driving assistance switched on, it will still slow if it thinks you’re too close to a vehicle in front, or you’re approaching a bend/roundabout etc.

In addition to what Tooks said, with the assistance switched on (which is the bit I like that renders B mode unnecessary most of the time in my opinion), it will also apply regen if you lift off and are over the speed limit.

So, on a motorway if you lift off and there’s a slower car in front of you (whether you are using ACC at the time or not) it will use regen to slow you; if you’re doing 70mph or less and there’s no car in front of you it will coast; if you’re doing more than 70mph it will use regen to slow you to 70mph.
