Found this fascinating. That the role batteries can play is not neccesarily about replacing like for like grid capacity. But by being instantly responsive they can both provide and as importantly absorb excess power from the grid. So allowing more renewables to be used.

Makes more sense of the role of ev to grid connection to me - that my Leaf could be part of stabilising the grid, so only needing to give or take small amounts of power along with other ev's plugged in.

Interesting article, so I wonder why national grid aren't getting in on the act - seems like a no-brainer to me.

Who says they, and other parties, aren't? Lot of large scale storage trials and research going on.
