The DC converter in the BMW hybrids (which handles the electric flow from batteries to motor, and motor back to the battery on regen) is liquid cooled because some hefty currents pass through it. So when you plug the car in, if the car's ECU decides the converter needs cooling, it will activate the cooling circuit. So you hear coolant sloshing and being pumped around; the radiator fan can also come on if the electric motor's been worked hard.

Have only had this in summer months, freaked me out the first time when the fan kicked in but it soon quietened down.
