From Electric Vehicle News:

22 miles all electric range? Not quite enough in my opinion and that is assuming that is "real world" range. In my experience 22 miles quoted is more likely going to 20 or less especially as the driver will be used to the 231bhp petrol engine. WOW! Not making a statement on fossil fuel use at all ;-)

BMW i is also setting benchmarks in the quest for zero CO2 emissions in urban driving.
I think it will need more than 22 miles EV range for that.

I don't know what to make of this car. On the one hand I like the fact that electric motors are going into another model but I really fail to see why in this case. This is a sports car with a petrol engine with MPG and emissions to suit... why is it a hybrid? I am confused. Perhaps someone could explain it to me. What is the target market? The electric motor is not going to make a great deal of difference to running costs unless you drive less than 22 miles a day regularly and people that are looking for a sports coupe like this probably will be doing a lot more than that.

Re: BMW i8 Faster than an M3 using 1/3rd less fuel than a Pr

So why then does it have 231bhp petrol engine? It ain't going to make much of a dent with just 22 mile range if you ask me.

Yes it would be making a dent of it were true but a 22 mile ev range cannot make that much of a difference can it when a 40 mile ev range doesn't make anything like that much difference with the Ampera?

You seem to be making the same mistake the media make and taking the claims at face value instead of applying what we know and a bit of common sense.

The thing is that it clearly isn't going to deliver that kind of mpg unless the test is over a short distance. What I would like to see and what it's more important is the mpg on petrol only. The Ampera is about 45 to 50... with a 231Bhp engine it isn't going to be anything like as good as that.

We all know that with EREV you can make the overall mpg figures look like anything you want. If you want a 100mpg then just do a test with the right electric vs petrol mix that gives you that. Similarly... want a 200 mpg then do less petrol driving. Want a 1000mpg... easy. That is why any mpg figure that uses both petrol and electric is meaningless. The only mpg figure that has any meaning at all is the mpg on petrol only.

This is why I don't believe the media hype or PR. It is almost always misleading.
