After nearly 5.5 years the time has come to say goodbye to the GTE. I have absolutely loved this car, to date it is the best car I have driven and as a family we’ve given it some stick. I was quite nervous when I purchased it in 2015 but I needn’t have been, it has served as a great platform to a BEV and also proved a lot of my petrol-head friends wrong.

My plan was to always replace at 5 years (when the extended warranty ran out) with another VW preferably ordered earlier in the year. I drove the ID3 and loved it but it’s too small with no option for external storage (bike rack box) and with my family growing I couldn’t wait for the ID4/Skoda Enyaq. In the meantime my company tax year was coming to an end and I was tempted by a deal on an iPace. I'll be nipping over there for a bit but will always keep an eye on the VW sub forums.

Thank you to everyone who helped over the years, this platform is a source of great knowledge.

The I-PACE is an amazing car. The best thing I have ever driven. Enjoy.

No moments of " Oh sod it, no one else is in the car, I'm going to press the GTE button "

No more " yes I do plan to plug it in, it is in fact a PHEV "

No more " Wonder if the app will actually work today ? "

No more " Cack the ICE woke up 200yards from getting home, it's 11pm and the bloody engine won't cut out whilst I try to change the timer for the real morning"

and ....
No more " Yes, it's a great car because I have GOT TWO ENGINES "

I really enjoyed the four years I had with my GTE.
It still brought a smile to my face every time I drove it.
But I just knew after the first six months, that my next car would have to be a BEV.
I used a Clio for about week a little earlier this month ( long story ) and this was the first time I spent some time behind the wheel in a ICE in the last 12 months.
Mmmmm ....... Wow, you soon get use to the silence of the EV is all I can say on that subject !.
It was nice to get a quick reality check - but the story ends right their !.
We all should try and find ourselves in an ICE every couple of months, just to reinforce why we bought an EV in the first place.
Travelling at a constant speed and listening to that engine drone and the vibration, very soon becomes both irritating and tiresome !.
Sometimes you don’t appreciate something until has been taken away, by that I mean the engine of course.
Glad to return to my EV after only a very short time back in the ICE.
A family friend required four new injectors fitted in his 2016 Skoda oil burner last week.
These where required in order for the car to pass the emission check for the MOT.
The garage doing the work has been a close friend of mine for over 40 years.
He was not carrying out the rectification work, only the retest.
When the car returned about ten days later, the owner said the bill to supply and install four REBUILT injectors was £1,700 !!!!!.
Bang a service on top of that and you are talking £2,000 all day.
I don’t call that cheap motoring at all !.
You are a good way into the cost of a new HV battery at that price.
And you STILL have all that rattling noise coming from under the bonnet as well.
Maybe the rattling noise is that small amount of loose change in his wallet after he paid that huge bill ?.
Never had or wanted an oil burner.

I'm giving my GTE back as my company car tomorrow, it's 67 plate advance with a few extras they wanted £15k for it with 51k on it clock. Loved the car over the time I've had it, carried all them miles for work and holiday trips up to Scotland. My heart was saying keep it but head said otherwise..

I start a new job in the new year and when I got the new company car choices there was a Merc a250e on the list with 44 mile electric range only attracting a 6%bik (7% from next April) so going with that. Should only be about £80 a month and saved on paying out for running it privately and the extended warranty..

Hopefully I'll like the Merc and it'll be a decent car like my GTE was anyway. Goodbye little GTE you'll be missed. Took me most of this afternoon just to empty everything out of it, surprising how many cubby holes there are!
