had an email exchange with Tesla this morning about the Chademo adaptor, below is a cut and paste from their response

For the time being, there are no development regardinh the ChaDemo adaptor.

No other information but though may be useful for those buying a Model S in the UK or considering one.

no nothing has been published that I know of, looks like Kevins prophecy of Model S hogging the AC side of the rapid chargers may come true :)

to be honest not an issue for me, the longest drive I do is about 200 miles each way, with destination charging thats easy for a model S

That's disappointing, I've been 'boasting' to friends about how I'm going to be using the free Ecotricity DC Chargers at the Welcome Break Services.....

The unknown here is what is the truth about sales volume for RHD UK spec? With low sales volume UK buyers could 'catch a cold'. European volumes could be lower (per 100k population) - but the car would be one spec for a huge market - with few differences to the US model?

I'm trying to understand what you've written there Brian - but I am struggling.
Whatever the product, if a manufacture doesn't sell enough, then there are problems with them supporting that product in that marketplace. Doesn't just apply to cars but we've just seen one US manufacturer (Chevvy) leave the UK market and they had lots of products across lots of price bands.

I think high power DC chargers are coming regardless if its Tesla or someone else. As more manufacturers release larger cars with bigger batteries and/or as battery capacity increases, then there will be a need to charge them faster.

Or fill the smaller cars quicker so we don't need to stand around drinking coffee and looking at our phones for so long. Even Kia Soul EV has just been released with 100kW CHAdeMO interface...

If that were a leaf you'd be at 80% before you'd even paid for your coffee....


I saw the 'blue' model S adapter for real today. Looked quite a neat bit of kit. I wonder if it would work in another type 2 vehicle?

From the couple of months winter work I did in the London store, I got a bit of an idea about this although I doubt I was told every last detail...
We were generally shifting 5-10 Model S' per week. Sometimes more, sometimes less...
The CHAdeMO adapter was sold initially and had to be withdrawn because demand has been too great actually. I guess that the same all across Europe, maybe they have decided to focus on a smaller number of countries initially. We were told that they will come back in the market in the future though.

I don't see any reaso why it wouldn't work on other type 2 cars... I've tried the leaf j1772 cable with my Roadster and the adaptor and it works perfectly well. I would assume that the charging protocol is much the same, perhaps some minor differences that could cause issues but I'd chance it if I had the opportunity!

The Model S can charge at up-to 22kW on AC, but 135kW on DC. CHAdeMO is DC, normally at 50kW. I suspect that the Model S adaptor gives the car the 50kW DC and manages the CHAdeMO communications to the charger. This means that you will only be able to use it with cars that take in high-current DC on a type-2 connector and that seems to be limited to the Euro-spec Model S.

Totally understand Matt but @snofsberry was talking about the Blue adaptor which I assume is 32 amp 240v 7kw AC... Therefore I would think it's reasonable to consider it might work with a Renault Zoe and BMW i3 and any other car with type 2...

"Last night I had a pfoblem with a Nissan 44kW charger on one if the highways in Japan. I've already charged at 7 different CHAdeMO chargers and this was the first time and first Nissan branded charger. It frequently stopped with CHAdeMO communication error, and I need to restart the charging session again and again. I think I tried 10 times during 90 minutes of charge. Eventually it smoked (!!) so I gave up."
