Forgive my technical ignorance here, but if I have a single phase 32kw charging cable and I plug it into a fast charger (50kw) will the MG charge at the full 50kw rate i e fully charged in about 40mins?

No it is limited to 7kw approx from AC. The only way to get the full 50kw potential is to use the CCS DC charger. (You have a 32amp cable not 32kw) the only cars that can take a >32kw AC charge are ones without any DC charge capability like first gen Renault Zoe.

So I don't need a special cable for them?
No. The cable is always tethered to the rapid charger. You don't use your own. Just plug in the CCS cable (not the type 2 one) and you're good to go.

Take a look at Zap Map to find a charger and what network it belongs to. Be sure to register with them if necessary before you try to charge. You may need an app or membership card. Others will just work with a contactless credit card.
