Chargeplace Scotland changing from Charge your Car to SWARCO eVolt

22653 Views 259 Replies 32 Participants Last post by  Duncan
News has just hit that Chargeplace Scotland (CPS) who have used Charge your Car for their authentication and billing for the last several years will be switching to SWARCO eVolt starting in July:

This is an interesting albeit not unexpected change. What does it mean for end users?

Will existing RFID cards continue to work or do we need new ones? Will CPS accounts (which are basically just CYC accounts and use the same CYC app) be migrated across or will we be needing to create new accounts?

Will CPS cards stop working on CYC sites in England and will CYC cards stop working on CPS sites in Scotland?

Will CPS finally get their own mobile app instead of just using the CYC branded app and a fairly useless web browser based lookup?

While I of course recognise eVolt and a lot of rapids on the CPS network are already eVolt units, I have no knowledge of their ability to run a back end authentication and billing system, although they're unlikely to be worse than CYC.

So, good news? Bad news? Ambivalent ? To be honest it's quite a while since I've used a CPS charger!

I don’t see anything on the iOS App Store yet.
They're probably at the mercy of Apple's random approval system. Even if they've approved beta versions of an app they have a tendency to turn round and raise a bunch of objections when you want the live version approved.

almost as if doing it at the last minute is a terrible idea…

It's 7:15am and all chargers are showing as 'unknown' on the CPS website and none showing at all on the app.
So looks like they have work to do....
Hopefully regular CPS users' rfid card will be on the chargers' whitelist so they can still get a charge?

Indeed. Hopefully any Swarco rfid card will work, but who knows. Experiences from anyone out there trying to use the network for it’s intended purpose today appreciated.

Also will show whether the helpine is up and running with enough operatives and they can remotely activate the chargers.

Well the CPS Android app isn't working for me. Can't log in, and if you touch a charger on the map the app just crashes. They are however now showing in the app at least.

As for the Swarco app the CPS Chargers aren't showing on that app's map. So it doesn't look like the Swarco RFID Card will work on them for now at least.

I'm going to be relying on the network again on Thursday. Hopefully they have some easy and reliable method of charging in place by then. Whether that's my CPS Card, or a payment website.

It says on the CPS website that the new app will be working from 2nd August.
Just installed the app on my tablet (Kindle Fire 10 HD) and it seems to be giving believable output.
No idea yet whether it actually works to get a charge of course.

The new CPS app (Swarco CPS v1.0.2) isn't displaying any chargers on my Android phone (Redmi Note 8) and the web based Live Map is showing all the chargers, but all greyed = 'unknown'.
My account page login is still working the same and listing all charges I've had.

There's a few errors on the LiveMap, such as chargers in the wrong location, missing chargers, triple headed chargers showing as AC only. Looks like a messy inherited dataset!
I charged the car today using my CPS RFID card. No issues.

I attempted to car my car on a APT Rapid, normally very reliable, using a RFID card which has been used maybe 25 times this month. NO JOY.

Since the. Map is coming back to life, I will try again tonight at a different charger😗

Good, I will be back to Argyll the end of this week and rely on the rapid at Lochgilphead and at the Harthill park & ride (whose address is now wrong - it should be Miller St). (I can use the Ultra rapids at the adjacent BP services if necessary).

I notice many of the chargers on the Live Map are now blue so they are gradually reconnecting them to the server it seems.

Also noticed that the rapids now seem to have the actual max charge rate instead of all being 50kW so many are now 44kW (the max I've seen at Lochgilphead) and others are 51kW or 22kW. So this is useful feature.

The app has disappeared from the App store.

I was driving past Newhouse a couple of days ago and noticed that the Chargemaster Ultracharger which has been there for a couple of years had a big red cross on the screen (didn't stop to take a close look to see what the error was) but there were two new Evolt rapids about 20 metres further along the car park that were both being used by cars.

Those must be pretty newly installed as its the first time I've seen them. Is the Chargemaster charger going to be decommissioned I wonder ? I hope not. Dissimilar redundancy at the same site is a good thing, not to mention having 3 rapids vs 2.

It was actually one of the specific chargers that they did a test migration on a month ago so I wonder what happened...

I take it no iOS version of this app has been published yet?

I think some of the older APT and Chargemaster chargers will be replaced or removed in time and hopefully the Inveraray rapid will be top of the list.
Otherwise it's looking like the majority of chargers are now available and many now in use.

I guess the reason for the accurate power output is to stop complaints from EV drivers expecting 50kw if the charger is shown as a this, and then only getting 44kw. The newer chargers seem more likely to be 51kw rated and older ones, 44kw but at least you now know what to expect. (y)

The Android version (which didn't display any chargers and also kept complaining about slow internet connection) has been removed so no IOS either although they did say 2nd August.
