With the promise of overnight temperatures dropping to close to freezing over the next few nights (in August!) I was wondering if it's beneficial to charge overnight.

Knowing that charging generates heat, would it be better to have the charge timer set so that charging finishes just before I leave for work? Is that better for the battery and will it give improved range?
(I've been thinking about this recently as the overnight temperatures have dropped from 20°c to 10°c and have already seen a difference in my morning commute of a few %, but didn't think I'd have to seriously consider it for a couple of months yet!)

Your logic is sound and that's how I have always set the charge and climate timers.

Setting a timer to end just before you leave is generally good practice, with the probable exception of very hot climates, where charging at the coolest time of day would be best.
