Why would they? A large chunk of design and R&D is still done in the UK.

It is the bit they kept when the Chinese bought them (other than all the equipment they shipped to China).

I doubt it, there will be a lot of posturing in the short term but business is usually business in the end. I’m sure the Economist will have a good article about it on Friday.

Bigger question is whether all the MGs will have to be replaced with UK made vehicles as the Chinese secret service can track them and record all conversations inside the cars!!!

I have it on good authority that can be done on all cars fitted for mobile phones, and not just by Government agencies. If they do wish to listen in then I have nothing to hide!

Ha. I don't think SAIC are in the category as Huawei.

it's my way or the Huawei!

I am not worried about the future of MG in the UK, even though it's mostly just a sales operation now, since MG aren't trying to become a major part of the UK's infrastructure. If MG were trying to become a key or sole supplier of vehicles for the government then I think they would get a a lot of push back.

ironically, lots of MG eZS owners wish their cars DID have telematics and could be monitored remotely, and one of the reasons has been that GDPR prevented it (SAIC's servers are all outside Europe?), so it does seem the Chinese can respect GDPR!

Not entirely true. The R&D/engineering and design team is fairly sizable (500+ employees) here. That remains from the pre-SAIC era. Styling in a lot of their cars happens here.

Interesting, whatever downsizing happened in 2019 In that article, it didn't shutdown either the Longbridge or the London design and R&D departments as they are still referenced here:

Wikipedia also references 500 employees, but not sure when that was updated.

I know they guys at Vehicle Handling Specialists Ltd used to work for MG/SAIC for many many years before they were made redundant last year.

They are developing the dampers for the ZS EV and many other MG’s.
