OK,

I'm due to collect my first EV on Thursday (26th) and called my current insurer M & S, for my car (Ford C-Max 2.0 Titanium Diesel 2007) to get a price. I was assuming that they'd be able to give me a price and maybe have to pay a small fee to change the car over... no. The current underwriter does not offer cover on that vehicle..!!?!?

"It means you'll have to take out a new 12 month policy" Fair enough, they give me a quote for the car £545.72 (up from £394.77 on the old car!). On top of that, they've got to do a new credit check for the new policy and if I don't want to take out a new policy with them, then there's a £50 cancellation fee..!!??

So I'm now going to have to get prices again for the car, has anyone got any recommendations for specific EV insurance or companies, or price they are paying for their 2015-2019 Kia Soul?

And I thought it was going to be straight forward...

LV Is generally considered one of the best options for EV insurance and tend to be fairly priced for most. Direct Line and Admiral don't have all the special extras for EVs but they do cover them and are also often fairly priced.

Things vary wildly in the world of insurance though for a whole list of risk reasons that would seem insignificant to the average person. What is the cheapest for me could be the most expensive for you, so obviously be sure to shop around, try some comparison websites and remember to check Quidco to see if you can get some extra cashback too! Don't be afraid to check some of the specialist EV insurers and brokers either. I've heard of people here getting some good deals over the years. Pluginsure is a name that comes up fairly often on these forums.

I'm with Direct Line. But as always with insurance, use the comparison sites and try Direct Line and Aviva separately. Prices vary wildly so theres no point taking someone elses cheapest quote and assuming its also going to be yours.

I’ve used Privilege for a number of years, always getting decent renewal quote so no need to shop around. They insured the e-Niro on my existing policy but renewal was a lot, though not as much as the quote @Sputnik72 received. Ended up with LV, not the cheapest I could find, Hastings were cheapest but have practices I don’t like (always handing out a high renewal quote) and LV get better reviews. Having yet another service that will recover me if run out of charge (I think I have three now) wasn’t really part of the decision but it’s a nice extra.

Going to try LV to see what their price is like. The frustrating thing with insurance is I have a quote I did for this car last month and selected the 27th as a start date, that price was £363.... but if I now want the insurance to start a day earlier, seeing as I now have a confirmed collection date.... it goes up to £386!! wtf...!!? SO frustrating.... still much cheaper than everywhere else, so far..

I have never fully trusted these comparison sites, some insurance companies don't use them.

Be careful! - ComparetheMarket fined £17.9m over competition law breach
but I wanted a toy baby meerkat.

more seriously, I did find the quotes I received through that particular site was better than going direct to the companies involved. You’re right that some companies don’t use them. I know people who swear by using small insurance brokers they’ve used for years. It’s always worth shopping around, but that does take time.

if you’re getting stupid results, like one day adding £20 it’s worth giving them a call.

I had the same switching from the Zoe to the MG. Dealer did the switch without extra charge, but when renewal came 2 months later the cost from Zoe to MG had gone up £350(ish). Quick search on C.T.M. got insured for less than Zoe at £246.

Oh,goodness. I've a cupboard full of them. I hope they're not breeding in the dark. I've got most of them still in the box unopened. I can't remember which Meerkat they are! I'm saving them for the great grandkids as future antics. (Antiques blooming auticrotec)

Take the insurance from the 27th and also take the driveaway insurance free from MG for a day

Biggest headache I had when switching last week was my insurer Quotemehappy is online only (no contact centre) and their site didn't recognise the new registration number for a couple of days. Just got it changed the morning of collection, cutting it a bit fine.

I've been using confused.com for years now and always had a very good quotes.
After I bought my Zoe I've done like you, went to my provider and asked to change the car (Audi S6 to Zoe), they quoted me some joke to change over so I cancelled the policy....went on the web and got insurance with the SAME Insurer for the money they have refunded me on my Audi S6 😂
Bottom line....shop around.

I'm with A plan after selling my T5 campervan and buying the BMW 225xe. Insurance is higher than for my convertible merc I had earlier this year! I was shocked. Over £700.

Comparable best quotes on comparison sites were over £1500....twice the price. I won't touch them. They aren't value for money. When I had the merc they came out at over £4000 yet elephant insured it for £900.

I always just go for the comparison sites and plenty of companies will insure you at a reasonable cost.

Just pick it up the next day. Say you had a cough or something.
