Ford EVs to go all in for the Tesla charge plug.

This is big news as Ford announced they will issue adapters to all Ford EV owners to access the Tesla network in USA. And future Ford EVs to use the original Tesla plug as standard.

Ford presently uses CCS. This announcement says that they will soon also be able to access all Tesla chargers via an adapter. So they will soon have access to all CCS Rapids as well as all of the Tesla hubs. And soon all Ford EVs will be fitted with the Tesla socket as standard, and are to dump the CCS socket.
Seems a dumb idea, as it then prevents Ford owners from accessing non-Tesla CCS chargers. In the US, Tesla are opening up the SC network to non-Tesla vehicles in the same way as in Europe and are retro-fitting a CCS adaptor to their chargers to facilitate this. Therefore, I do not see what Ford stand to gain from this?

How funny today world is...... Everybody are on a warpath with Tesla for one reason or the other however, everybody either trying to beat them, or trying to incorporate in some level with them 😅. Personally I am not a fan of Musk, he had created a lot of unnecessary tension but one thing for sure....for a guy that had never been involved or part from the motor world he managed to shake the whole industry in a way that no one could have predicted. He created a car/product that 10 years later still ahead of many. Lately more and more car makers are catching up and at some point perhaps they will get ahead but it took them a lot of years to do so. Love him, or hate him but the guy is good of what he is doing.

No in Europe, now the US is a whole different ball game 😂 He is dominating the market there so I will not be surprised if some of the others follow.

I think this is a major move. And if Ford EVs will be able to also just plug in and walk away like a Tesla it will persuade many to select Ford for their EV. And when the onboard socket becomes the Tesla standard they will also be able to access CCS Rapids using a different adapter so that they will have full access to the entire network there. But then a better experience using the Tesla network.

Europe has settled on the CCS standard but they now have to work to introduce the same plug n play convenience or this will be a constant niggle going forwards.
The fun thing about all this is that the Tesla charging protocols have over time morphed into being CCS signalling, rather than being a proprietary protocol.
So it's just about a different connector, and the ability of the vehicle to be able to signal the authentication credentials (which is now part of the CCS signalling via Plug & Charge).
Given that North America doesn't really do much three-phase, the limited number of conductors on the Tesla vehicle inlet doesn't matter too much. For Europe, certainly on the mainland, it's very much required to be able to charge three-phase AC at home, so the Tesla connector won't do.
China is doing its own thing with GB-T, which like Chademo-equipped vehicles has separate AC and DC inlets, though they are looking at changing to ChaoJi, aka Chademo 3.0, with adapters for backwards compatibility, still with separate inlets for AC and DC.

There is already an adapter for Tesla owners to access CCS Rapids so that when Ford move to fit the Tesla socket they will then be able to use that same adapter to give them full access to all Tesla superchargers as well as all CCS Rapids. But the main advantage is that Ford will be able to easily use the Tesla outlets which have proven to be much more reliable.
Adding support for the Tesla connector makes sense in the US. Removing CCS does not. I would suspect that the message got corrupted somehow and actually Ford will support both there indefinitely.

This seems to be an actual Ford/Tesla deal that's been struck. Tesla are to develop the Ford adapter so that the Tesla plug can be inserted into the present Ford car's CCS socket to give Ford cars access to the Tesla supercharger network. So that Ford will be able to use both the existing CCS Rapids as well as the entire Tesla Rapids. Nothing is to be removed or phased out.

Then in a couple of years Ford will start to install the Tesla proprietary socket in the cars as original equipment. And at that time also use a different adapter to enable Ford cars to also use the CCS network as well as the Tesla network.

Whether other OEM's follow this initiative is the next question. Because if they do then the CCS network in the USA would indeed be under threat.

The american CCS1 connector is horrible. It's massive, and only locked from a latch on the top. "Tesla" connector in North America is just a more compact CCS connector, the protocol is still the same. This means CCS networks can easily add both CCS1 and Tesla connectors on chargers. Tesla has already over 50% market share in USA, so standardizing around most common plug makes sense.
