No I need to get back onto this as the GTE is due this service by September. The VW garage never got back to me, typical.

One of the great advantages of moving away from steam was the elimination of annual boiler inspections/testing.

Substitute ICE for steam and you get the picture.

Where in the UK are you? I exclusively used Citygate in Watford but they lost their HV Tech and couldn’t get lower than £890 for the cambelt. Parkway Northampton (where the HV battery recall was done) quoted and confirmed in writing £494 (inc VAT). I’m pretty much in the middle so no real travel issues.

I would recommend getting this job done at a VW independant rather than a main dealer. A friend had it done on his GTE for £450 inc water pump change at an indy. Most of the cost is labour, so savings can be had using an independant's cheaper labour rate.
Tom66 stated in an earlier post that GTE water pumps were electric!
So did your friend have a seperate issue with his pump? I'm just curious.

Holly shit, that is expensive !.
When I enquired at my small local dealer in North Wales, I am sure it was around the £500 mark.
TWO days !.
Bloody hell, they can build the whole car in less time than that.
Yeah - You need to shop around, I would not pay anything close to that figure.
That is extortion, pure and simple !.
Was the bloke wearing a mark and holding up a gun when he gave you the quote.
There is people in prison for less crimes than that !.
It can not be two and a half days work, even using good old trusty “Man Maths”.
2.5 days work ( 20 hours ish ) at what roughy ...... £80 an hour ?.
But it will be more than this.
That’s £1,600 and we have not purchased any parts yet !.
If it take one of their tech’s 2.5 days to change a cam belt, he should be looking for another job !.
Less than a day is about right I think, they are just trying to justify the bill by increasing the time it takes, in their heads.
It’s one of them :- “Think of a number between 1 and 10, multiply it by 6, then subject the first number” .... you know how the rest goes.
I hate all the bullshit they try to spin.
They are not even good at either.
Hit the phone, start ringing around.
When you find another dealer that is much cheaper, ring the service manager and ask him why ?.

I thought your quote at the start of the thread was on the high end, but £1120 seems a tad on the high side. I'd call a few other VW services centres for a quote to see if this one is yanking the chain on your wallet, if only to see the results.

A friend of mine upon hearing the quote remarked, "oh, it's pretty simple Tom; clearly the only way to get to the cambelt on that car is to replace the entire left hand side of the car... all considered that is a bargain!"

Something really wrong here. Parkway Northampton had my car for the day, carried out the cambelt change, MOT and four wheel alignment and the bill was under £600 inc VAT. I do wonder if they are looking at the wrong engine type on their pricing system. Many years ago we had cruise control installed on our mk 5 GT and the initial price from dealers was coming back North of £400 but my local VW garage explained there was a unique part number which included the software, stalk and time and was circa £150.

For that money I’d be inclined to drive from Leeds to VW Parkway in Leicester. Happy to share my email quote with you if you need.

@Oilymo that could be useful; at the very least they might be prepared to match the quote! I've sent you a message.

Leeds have it wrong, pure as simple.
Either that, our they need to be behind bars !.
The metal type, not the ones selling beer !.
Mind you, who ever gave you quote could have been pissed at the time.
How do they screw up with something as easy as that I wonder ?.
The registration / chassis number of the car should throw up everything they need to know.
Mind you, it may not be the system, probably the thing between the screen and the chair if you ask me.

The lady on the phone said that the tool they need to change the cambelt needs a software update so they couldn't even book me in immediately, it would be next week.

So, your wrench needs a software update? Things have come along .... and not necessarily in the right direction...

Yup that's what they said when I called them up with @Oilymo's quote ...

But then they said hey we can do it for £600 if you like!! What's with the massive price drop? They only swapping a quarter of the car now? She couldn't answer me.

I've just taken my GTE for a cambelt replacement (Marshalls in Harlow) and they initially quoted just shy of £500. They then told me that they've mis-quoted and it should have been £1000 as it's the GTE! Not sure why it's doubled, but make make sure you get a written quotation. ;)
