I had the Golf GTE for 4 years and exactly the same as you, just needed more space for the family. The jump has been largely positive but I do really miss the handling of the Golf. I initially thought that may be the stock tyres were awful but I guess the longer wheelbase and additional weight take their toll. Now I've accepted it's not a hot hatch I am really enjoying it - still fells plenty nippy off the line, it's just that I have to break much earlier before I enter a corner
