It's dated 13/12/2020, but I wonder when he recorded it. Although the verdict was positive, he hadn't done much research. Surely, anyone would know the ID.3 has software problems before now? The whole WLTP range thing was a bit irritating as well; it's not the EV manufacturers fault that the test isn't realistic.

This guy is a great reviewer of cars, one of my favourite.

Harry’s garage
Agreed - love watching his videos. (His farming ones are really good too).

He doesn’t always get everything spot on, and you’re still better off watching Bjørn for the thorough and more nerdy stuff, but Harry is interesting because he’s more like the average person in the UK who has driven ICE cars their whole life and is now trying to get to grips with EVs.

What just about every EV review he does highlights for me is that the whole "disappearing range" thing isn’t going to go away until car manufacturers a) bake in much better range estimation & trip planning (essentially they need to buy out or just copy ABRP and integrate that functionality into the car) and b) get much better at communicating range etc. Simply sticking the WLTP figure on a piece of paper and handing it to a journalist is just asking for trouble really.

I’ve been a fan of Harry Metcalfe since his EVO magazine launch days, but I find this ‘review’ a bit light touch. He’s no stranger to EVs, runs an iPace I think, but he did seem very hooked up on the WLTP vs real world range.

Nobody cares in ICE reviews, when did you last watch one where they spent a third of the review talking about how the actual range achieved was nowhere near the predicted? Exactly.

Don‘t read the comments either, the usual garbage, and show what attitudes need to be overcome. Maybe that’s what Harry was trying to highlight, that until EVs are just jump in and go type cars, they’re going to be a difficult sell. And still too expensive.

That review would have been very very different had he tested the car in the summer. I suspect the range would be far closer to the quoted 260 when it's 20-25 Celsius outside than when he drove it at 5 C. Unfortunately he does not mention the difference the temperature makes on range at all, which is a little annoying for those of us who already know the drastic effect it can have. If you show that review to someone who knows nothing about EVs, they would likely be quite put off by it.

I drive them all the time, courtesy of Avis.

They’re great as a run of the mill rental car.

But as Harry says in the video, for the amount of money it’s a bit underwhelming. :)
I didn’t ask whether you drive them, I said if you don’t like VWs, then move along. Maybe Avis will give you an ID.3 rental to try one day?

He’s got possibly the worst interior colour combination on that review vehicle, the black trim looks miles better in my view, I’ve got few complaints about the interior, it’s well screwed together and no creaks or rattles at all.

Price is subjective, but who pays list price for cars these days?

I was thinking about this yesterday when I watched another EV group test on YouTube and they spent half the time talking about the list price.

It’s just irrelevant nowadays in a lot of a cases - they’d be better off trying to estimate the average monthly cost of each car over a 2 or 3 year term doing, say, 10K miles p/a and comparing “the price” that way.

I hope so.

I don’t just ‘try’ them, I use them. For work.

Or do you need to buy one outright to be able to have an opinion on them?
No, but then did anybody say you had to? VW has a broad range of models from tin box runabouts to luxury barges, I can honestly say I don’t like all VWs, I just like some of them.

It would be somewhat stupid and blinkered to say I loved or hated any brands cars in totality. I like the Tesla Model 3, but the Model X leaves me cold.

I like Heinz tomato ketchup, but hate Heinz tomato soup. What gives?

Funnily enough, I use my VW a lot too. For work.

A good fix for the WLTP problem would be to make them do two. One at 0 degrees and one at 25 degrees. Either that or people will eventually learn that mileage changes given the circumstances. Exactly the same as ICE cars

Must say I’m very pleasantly surprised by the interior quality of my new 1st edition.
The only hardware thing so far that is annoying is the light control panel squeezed into an inaccessible place.

Just finished watching the latest review of the ID4 from Autogefuhl.
Briefly, he said the hardware / drive of the car is perfect, but he said that the entertainment system / software of the car is absolutely shocking !.
He said that VW builds a fantastic car ( he is a VW fan boy ) but the software is just inadequate and almost unusable !.
"They need to fix it, and fix it NOW".
Here is the video if anybody would like to see it.
