I know all eyes are rightly focused on Donington right now, but a little more nuts and bolts is the High Performance Low Carbon event today. It's for networking rather than being a show and although it's focusing on component technologies there is still plenty to think about close to consumer readiness.

How does an EV with a gearbox sound? Company here exhibiting tech to reduce motorway EV consumption by 15%. Smooth and imperceptible autoshifts - sounds more like an Overdrive than anything else. Could be interesting.

What about a 1000hp 220mph electric motorcycle? Being built as a showcase. Looks mad. No photos allowed, sadly.

Hydrogen-powered range extender? Lotus Evora 414E with a 14.4kWh pack mated to a 1.2l 3 Cyl effort? Good for 408hp, that. Solving the Titanium welding conundrum to open up new Lightweighting options? Taking 20kg out of a car seat? Opening a UK fuel cell manufacturing facility? It's all here. Amazing to see the amount of UK entrepreneurs doing the work that sits below the surface for most of us.

Got a look at the Drayson B12 in some detail too. Not running though 8-(

It was quite a boot camp - 30 5 min pitches in the morning, and some more trad presentations in the afternoon on subjects like the Advanced Propulsion Centre, TSB, Niche Vehicle Network etc.

Aside from the individual bits of interest, the event was much bigger and better attended than last year. Seeing this more and more in the Low Carbon space. Ecobuild was the same - a real head of steam is building up. I just hope policy doesn't bin it.
