I know there are either one or two drive motors, but how many motors altogether. I drove one for the first time yesterday (having placed my order without driving, for the first time in my life), and was astonished by the number of things that are motorised. Seats, mirrors, steering column, boot - most with more than one motor. Anyone know?

I arrived for my test drive in my 25 year old MX5, which only has two electric motors - one for each window. I wonder how many of the Tesla motors will still be working in 25 years time, but that's another issue. The contrast between the two cars was (unsurprisingly) startling. Analogue vs digital. Love them both.

There's probably a motor that controls the steering locking, adjustment etc, seat adjustment?, power steering, is this what you mean?

Yes, I’m intrigued as to how many motors there are in total in an m3. I know it trivial, but I bet it’s over 30. Google isn’t being very helpful.

It makes up for it by having less moving parts that will fail catastrophically, like in your MX5 ICE. ;)

Pretty sure your MX5 will have a starter motor and wiper motors too!
Ahh damn, I was about to ask how his engine powers his wipers! Must be a heck of a lot of gears and belts  they wipe the faster the revs go!

Yes, OK, there are other motors in the MX-5. I’m not making a value judgement about which is better. I’m hoping that at some point in the next few years a Tesla will donate its small drive motor to the Mazda so I can use it relatively guilt free into the future.

Anyone got a number for the m3 motors?

Some guesses in here but lets have a go at starting a list:

1 or 2 - drive motors
1 - windscreen wipers
1 - fan blower
1 - air direction adjustment
4 - seat adjustment
2 - steering column adjustment
1 - charge port flap
1 - air con compressor
1 - coolant pump
2 - headlight adjustment
2 - Door mirrors

Not quite at 42 yet so left a few for others to find. 😁

EDIT - just realised a few very obvious ones are missing!

That looks pretty comprehensive, but surely there’s more in the seats?

Surely more than two for the mirrors too?

Should you count the charging flap release? I would think that is a solenoid. If you do count it you have to include four door locks, a boot lock and a frunk lock too.

My first car was a Ford Popular named Betsy. It had vacuum powered wipers (worked off the inlet manifold, I believe). When you put your foot down they stopped! Circa 1960.
