When an EV's fully off, the contactors are opened which totally disconnects the HV battery. This is a safety thing as much as anything, in case some gge mechanic starts poking at orange wires under the bonnet. But maybe Teslas don't open their contactors, as they're known to suffer "vampire" drain of a few % of the traction battery for every day sitting unused.

The 2012 Amperas do this and as a result the 12V battery, which is always powering the radio circuitry to listen for the keyfob at very least, gradually goes flat, even though the HV battery's fine. GM realised there was a problem, so the 2013 model wakes up every 24 hours & tops-up the 12V, providing it's plugged into an EVSE. Typical GM, like most mfrs, couldn't give a damn about updating cars already sold, so they never made this fix available for the 2012 model. About time they learnt from Tesla.

(que in black and white images) In these trying times, maintaining a good lifestyle for you and your car is difficult, to say the least. To keep your EV, as well as yourself, in good shape, (cue in colourful images) go for a 10 mile drive to the nearby forest and take a short walk by yourself, say 1 hour. The car will top-up the 12 V battery and you'll get some well deserved fresh air and time to process your thoughts. Don't forget your five-a-day!

So should I turn on my Leaf 40kWh at regular intervals to top up the 12v battery, or will it do that anyway? I seem to remember reading in another thread someone asking why a single blue light was flashing even though it wasn't plugged in, and the response was that it was topping up the 12v battery.

Different cars and different generations of the same car use different strategies. In the first instance RTFM for your specific vehicle.

If in doubt, plug in an external 12v battery charger, an electronic one that doesnt require the 12v battery to be disconnected from the car.

It says in the manual that the 12v is charged automatically even when switched off. The 3rd blue light will flash when this is happening. It doesn’t give any precise details of how often it is checking etc.

UK clamping down on unnecessary car journeys to beauty spots, or at least that is how last night's news was reporting it
An argument to use the car to do the shopping, possibly via a slghtly longer route?

Here is a good article from ChargeMap.
That article feels a bit out of date. Not all car battery chargers are the same regarding degredation. Mostly becaue not all BEVs use the same technology. So a test on Nissan Leaf may not apply to say, the E-Niro. Not that I'm an expert!

Rant

I feel that with this pandemic situation there are far more many videos on youtube and most point to "How/what blah blah blah during corona virus". Gym, shopping, ev ownership, breathing, showering, chopping veggies etc. I'm sure there's a video on "how to watch porn during the corona virus"... Unless you keep your EV unmoved for weeks, just... don't worry about it! Everything else is just hearsay and superstition.

Thank you for letting me rant.

I took the Ioniq out for a 20 minute blitz up the A414 today partly to get in moving, partly to put the battery to under 80% and partly because I haven't left the house alone since the Thursday before lockdown.

Still managed to spot an Audi cutting someone up on a stretch of road that contained him, me and the car he cut up, diving in front of him at an approach to a roundabout with about 20 feet to spare. And it wasn't like he needed to be in that lane anyway, it was a longabout and both of them were going straight on. All he needed to do was stay in lane and pull past!
