I thought you might like to see just how government and industry conspire to prevent free consumer choice :(

@Paul_Churchley : personally I wouldn't repair, I'd break it down for parts and rebuild into an OpenEVSE, with selectable charge rate. The case would be great as it's a good shape for cable storage.
Thanks for that Dave. I didn't realise it was really was that mainstream.

<off-topic warning>
I have a 32A pod point home charging unit that was making rhythmic clicking noises sometimes (1 a second). I have had a BG POLAR installed now... because I could... and removed the pod point for repair and installation at my new house when I move.

Do you think this is repairable cheaply? This is the inside...

</off-topic warning>
Most parts inside are cheap of the self so is possible.
If you want to fix it pm me and I will give advice (will need more info) as repairs should only be done by an approved repairer and I wouldn't won't to get into trouble with uk evse
Anyone know if other DIY charger groups like Open EVSE have had a letter?

Next they will be wanting to stop people from making their own EV conversions.. maybe they don't realise...

If the RCBO & Relay are good all you need is to put in a mainpine evse controller unit (zcw shop were selling them) and take out the 12v psu and the PCB. a very easy job.

The clunking sound was a software issue - if you give PodPoint a call they should be able to get it updated for you. (I know several of us had this problem and it was resolved eventually.)
Thanks for all your advice... very useful :)

I do like the idea of simply using the components to make up a DIY EVSE but I won't mention that here in case UK EVSE association is watching ;)

Until we move house it will just remain in the garage so no action for a few months probably. More at that time then.

Thanks again :)

I understand that several members of the Battery Vehicle Society are writing to UK EVSE to express their concerns about the restrictions placed on safe DIY projects.

I have made a formal complaint to the Competition And Markets Authority who have recently taken over from the OFT.

I think it would be a good time for everyone to join the Electric Vehicles Drivers Association because this is just one of the many issues that EV drivers will face going forward.

some supportive posts over on the Tesla Motors Club forum :)
I'm not sure about the current EU data protection law.
But I am sure if you take personal information (cookies/ contact forms) you need a privacy policy.
If this is correct one of the members of UK EVSE is breaking the law.
Talk about glass houses.
I have now written to Duncan Hames MP, Ashley Fox MEP, and The Guardian.

I've asked them to review the role of the UK EVSE members in deployments like Highland Council as well as the request for ZCW to stop providing EVSE information for DIY.

I'm also hopeful that the Competition And Markets Authority will undertake an investigation.

Personally, I'm tired of reading about £37,500 Charging Stations funded by tax payers and think we need real and effective competition to drive down prices in the UK market.

I repeat what I said previously, now is a good time for everyone to join the Electric Vehicles Drivers Association because drivers need a voice.

Can non-EV drivers (non-car drivers even at the moment) join the EVDA ?
You'll never know until you try it!:rolleyes:

Yes, but as an associate member.
You should write to Private Eye - they would snap up this story.
Thanks for the suggestion, contacted them today :)
Does by electric bike count as an electric vehicle, being that it's electric and a vehicle ? I admit that I tend to ride it rather than drive it though !
That is a tricky one and probably needs to be asked of the EVDA-UK board.

I will note that the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 states "an electrically assisted pedal cycle ... shall be treated as not being a motor vehicle. " - however this may not be relevant.
I'm note entirely serious on this just so we're sure :) But it is the electric vehicle drivers association, no the electric motor vehicle drivers association.

Associate membership would be fine.
Can I ask you to click the "**JOIN**" link at the top right of evda-uk.org ;)
1. I think it's promising that the threat of competition from DIY EVSE is of such concern to this organisation. The price of EVSE is unreasonable and should the OLEV grant for domestic installs not be renewed, will drop massively when there is genuine competition amongst suppliers.

2. The letter is laughable. Anybody can visit a local B&Q and buy all of the components required to completly wire a house. Consumer Units, RCB's, cable, sockets, light switches, cookers even outdoor sockets etc... A plumbers merchants will supply anyone with a boiler, and there are scores of online retailers selling gas fires. DIY EVSE is no different!

Transport Evolved - UK Trade Association Wants to Stop DIY Charging Stations

"The UK Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment association, a trade body that represents suppliers of charging stations and charging station management systems, has written a strongly-worded letter asking a UK charity to cease the promotion of do-it-yourself charging stations."
