PHEV will be the next big thing, if only for emission control. It will ease more people into BEV, as will Model 3, but unless there are dramatic chances in infrastructure and legislation, I can't see a tipping point coming for at least another 15 years.

We need to remember that with a handful of widely available models available, EVs can't exactly make a splash in the market. There are 6 well known manufacturers who have plugin EVs of some variety in their range :

Nissan : 5.18%
Vauxhall : 11.46%
Mitsubishi : 0.4%
BMW : 6%
Renault : 2%
Toyota : 3.91 %
Where did you get those % from? I am sure there are more Toyota hybrids on the road than the rest put together... Or is that overall marketshare?

When you can rock up at any backstreet garage to get a refurbished battery installed, or an inverter replaced, then you know you are out of the early adopter phase.

Again worth comparing with phones. It took years and global market success before you could go to any old phone shop / market stall to get your out of warranty iPhone fixed. Before then, it was Apple or the bin.
