So I am looking to install one at the mother in laws as it's one of those ev journeys where I sometimes wouldn't like to stay the night to charge up. 72 miles both ways means a 12 hour charge on domestic so too long! Whats the cheapest way to get one installed? Buy an ole grant one off ebay and have it installed independently?

Without them buying an EV, you will struggle to obtain a grant.

You can buy a Rolec for under £400 now and can either use a local spark or an EV specialist.

I'd be careful about doing that its fraud on the sellers part and I'm sure you wouldn't want to get involved in that. The seller has agreed to keep the unit for 3 years and and you'd have no warranty. As a decent accredited installer we wouldn't install a unit without knowing where it came from. You may find less scrupulous installers elesewhere but you still won't have a warranty.

Have a look for a rapid charger nearby - might make more sense :)

Or... for about £250 (and the assistance of an electrician / 'competent person'), you can make your own! (No monitoring, no grant, no DIY time factored in - just bits - but a perfectly workable system, even for 32A - tho why everyone doesn't just use a good quality 13A socket is beyond me).

£300 seems fair for a legit one. Is £250 factoring your own time in? I don't understand why installers are saying they cant install them for less than £900 when the unit retails at £300

Have you been involved with government grants before? There's a meter to install, 3 years of monitoring, a shed load of paperwork for every job, 3 years of warranty - oh and non payment from the government for months on end. Any clearer now ;-)

Guys,

I wanted to give you a heads up first, we'll be releasing a simplified online application form shortly. Our aim is to make the whole OLEV Home Charge application process much simpler; something like this:

Visit our website
Confirm eligibility with series of simple questions
Create unique log-in (allows you to save progress)
Upload photos and required documents
Make secure payment
We book you in!

With our nationwide coverage and quality ABL charge stations this should make the whole process smoother and simpler to get your home EVSE equipped.

More to follow...

Had a charger installed under the OLEV (auto correct decides I mean "pleb" - which after reading some posts on here about them may not be totally unfair) grant scheme and I'm not sure I have a meter installed on our unit.

Can someone please tell me or show me what one would look like?

Cheers.

You might not have a separate meter: depends on EVSE.
Something like a Rolec or ABL doesn't (usually / ever?) include the monitoring required by the OLEV grant so something like an Emlite GPRS meter has to be added in the EVSE supply, to feed data back.
AFAIK the units from British Gas and Chargemaster include a GPRS data feature internally. Unfortunately this means you don't get a display, but I believe you can request data. (?)

My chargemaster generates random numbers, which it jokingly puts up on a website you can download them from, for a laugh.

... and OLEV is supposing to use this data!?!? I've had everything from charging 1.5kWh in 32 days, to 50kWh in 3 minutes. That's gonna throw up a few outliers in the data ... or maybe not and this is what the rest of the CM charge point users are getting too?

Mine was like that when it went in 2 years ago, so I just ignored it. I checked it again this week and actually the numbers now look about right - maybe they've fixed some backend system problem.
