Hi guys,

I was wondering if there were any screenshots or the like of the functionality of Kaluza processing the "Smart" side of things on your chargers? I'm only interested when the smart tariff functionality is implemented as I don't believe there is any of that yet? e.g. getting the cheapest half-hourly rates from Octo Agile to charge during the night.

Hi Pjblink!

Thanks for your question regarding the functionality of the Smart+ - mainly the tariff function.

This went live on Monday actually! You can learn a little more here:

If you have any further questions I'd be happy to answer, let me know.

Thanks,

Hi Liam,

Thanks for your response. So this wont help with the octopus agile tariff? For that, it would need to ping out to the API once a day to update the schedule (the same as the OHME cable does). Your functionality is based on a fixed schedule?

Hi Pjblink,

Yes, that is correct. We have implemented this feature currently on a fixed schedule basis, we are working on Agile integration next, so keep an eye out.

Thanks,

Awesome :) the moment that drops I think you'll have a spike in customer demand, me included :)

That's great to hear.

Just so you are aware, the unit when installed has over-the-air updates, so if you were to have one installed now or before the feature is live, you will still have the feature when updated! Food for thought!

Thanks,

Is it a purely cloud-based system, or is configuration stored on the wallbox? i.e. if the network is down (or just my broadband), would the tariff timeslots still trigger a charge?

I am on a flat rate tariff, but I want to be able to schedule the charge for a certain time. This is so if I need to charge to 100% I can schedule it to start at say 4AM so it doesn't site at 100% overnight degrading the batteries.

I can see there is a charge stop time - but is there a scheduled charge start time?

Also I want to regulate the amount of charge I want to add so by setting a start stop time, for normal use i can effectively charge to asay 80% ish.

Possible?

Hi,
My install is due next week and was slightly worried reading this and a few other threads that I won't be able to complete a simple timed charge with this system. I have economy seven at the moment until I can move to a cheaper electricity supplier. I just want it to charge my car in the night on the lower tariff in most cases and set it to come on at 12:15am and go off at 7:15am. Is this possible? Otherwise I may have to alter my order to a chargemaster system.
Many thanks,
Lee

Hi Lee,

Thanks for your question - with the new Tariff feature mentioned above, you can set your tariff rates and times, and the unit will charge within these times only up until your 'ready' time (7.15am). It works in this way you mentioned, and the charge won't start until 12:15am, but if you have a larger battery (for example 100 kWh Tesla) and you are near to flat you run the risk of not having a 100% charge at your ready time, as the unit can only charge at 7kW.

Thanks,

Hi. Is there any ETA on the capability to exploit maximum charging from solar panels, reverting to lower cost tariff charging if solar capacity is insufficient?

Thanks,
Ian

Hi Ian,

We're currently in the final stages of BETA Testing this feature. Please keep an eye out for news in the next couple of weeks.

Hi - if I don't have a timed / economy 7 tariff, what is the advantage of using the "Kaluza Smart Mode", instead of disconnecting it from the internet and turning it into a "dumb" charger at full 7kW 100% of the time ?

And - what happens if I untick all the scheduling boxes in settings ?

Thanks

Liam,

how do you monitor the excess solar output? Do you have a current sensor already fitted when the unit is installed? I'm just looking for a new charger and my current decision is between your unit and the Zappi V2. Keen to understand the differences.

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave!

Apologies for the late reply.

Yes, we install a CT clamp on the main feed to track excess solar, and it actually went live today. We do install this on all installs too - so for future upgrades it will work.

Thanks,

I have just had this charger installed and have only used it once so far so may be missing something, but it does seem to be rather disappointing so far. In particular:

  • It started charging as soon as plugged in even though I set it up with a low rate period from 00:30 to 04:30 for Octopus go and set a ready by time of 7am. I had to go back to using the timer on the car to stop this.
  • The estimated cost of the charge was too high - it looks like it used the peak rate for about the first half hour even though it only charged at the off peak rate. (I used 11.3kWh which would cost 56.5p, but it says it cost 73p).
  • I think the estimated electricity usage was high based on my smart meter readings.
I assume the app is meant to optimise the charge rate to have the car ready by the time selected, but how does it know how much charge you need? I don't think it can get this information from the car and there is no way of telling the app things like the size of your battery, its current state of charge and the charge you want by the departure time, so how can it work it all out? The engineer asked me the size of the battery, so it may know this, but there doesn't seem to be any way of changing it.

I want to use the charge to make the best use of my excess solar power during the Summer. It's good to see that this has been implemented, but a bit disappointing that once it starts charging on solar it will continue until the battery is full, even when there is no solar power available. Would it be possible to set a time window for solar charging?

I'm very pleased with the unit itself and with the quality of the installation, but so far the smart features don't seem to work or to be of any value if they did work (hopefully the solar charging will work).

Likewise - the Smart features seem to be patchy at best. Often get home to find the charger offline and when it is restarted it seems to forget about only charging off peak for the first day or so.
