Is there a simple way to determine whether a Leaf is a generation 1 or 2 model?

Thanks.

Turn on ignition and see if you can cycle dash display to show percentage or there must be a new prefix on the VIN as the gen2 is now made in UK instead of imported. Mines SJNFAAZE0U600xxxx

Eco button on steering wheel or footbrake means a gen 2
Plenty of other details changes as others are mentioning but these can be seen just by looking into the car.
Also a light interior is almost but not quite always a gen 1 as it's an option on the gen 2.

And for reference the Japanese Gen 1's are of the form "JN1FAAZE0Uxxxxxxx"

What about year, is anything 2013 onward Gen 2?
No. If you aren't familiar with the car, the easiest way is to check the VIN. UK Gen 2 cars VIN starts with SJ.

The first letter of the VIN is the country code. This is usually but not always where the car was manufactured. S is England.

Be careful with 2013 models as that was the change over period and some Gen 1s were registered late as 13 reg and are still being offered by dealers.
These are what I looked out for as they are easily seen visually.
Gen 1 - Has the charger in the boot adjacent to the rear seats and looks like a solid block. The Gen 2 has the recess.
Gen 1 - Has the electronic handbrake in the centre console, the Gen 2 is now just a small storage bay and has mechanical foot brake.
Gen 1 - Has D/Eco on the gear selector. Gen 2 has D/B and the Eco button is on the right of the steering wheel (except the Visia which still has D/Eco as having no B-Mode)
Gen 1 - Has the very light 'cream' interior. The Gen 2 has a dark grey interior but beware as there a few with the light grey upholstery.

I created a few photos to help me and others.
