used cars for more than you can get those cars brand new.
Not sure how you're working that out?

The MG ZS Standard Range SE for example costs £30,995 new (plus metallic paint), and we're selling with metallic paint on delivery mileage for £27,574. That's a saving of £3421.

The ZS EV Standard Range Trophy in Dynamic Red costs £33,690 new, and would no longer have the panoramic sunroof in the specification. Ours is £28,974. That's a saving of £4,716

The MG4 Standard Range SE costs £26,995, and our blue one is £26,599. That's £396 less, and it's available to drive away today, not wait 3+ months for one.

I think he was comparing with Autotrader where MG ZS have dropped in value to ~£23k with a few thousand miles and delivery mileage/new MG4 are under £26k

You're prices aren't that expensive but just on par tbh

and £604 more than a brand new one would have been 8 days ago i.e. when car was originally bought.

I agree we don't have a time machine and many vehicles have had their list price rise by £1000 since the New Year but I'm anticipating dealers will soon start to offer discounts against the new prices to maintain sales.

If a buyer wants a car now, rather than wait though this is an option.

I said " for more than you can get those cars brand new ", not "for more than RPP".
I bought my brand new EV for 8k less than RPP.

There really aren't many discounts available on new MGs currently. Hence quoting RRPs.

literally just popped into carwow and within 5min i had a 2k under RPP quote for the car you mentioned above.
Is that for a car you could get in a reasonable amount of time? I don't know what things are like now, but a few months ago local dealers weren't even willing to give a rough time frame. "It might be 4 to 12 months, but we just don't know" They were also unwilling to guarantee the price would not go up by the time a car did arrive.

Of course some dealers might have new MGs on the forecourt.

Who can tell. Not all dealers are truthful and manufacturers change their estimates regularly.

MG4 for example have been relatively random recently with dealers unable to order but instead receiving "randomly allocated" stock sometimes matching their customers demand and other times being surplus and hence available for immediate delivery. Apparently that's due to change but there's no sign of it yet.

What has changed is that here is a dealer with 30 ev's available.
Literally take your pick.
That wouldn't have been the case even 6 months ago.
We have a buyers market coming.
To put this into context, this is 30-40 MG EVs out of a dealer group with almost 900 used vehicles available, and around £22m of stock. We sold over 1000 MGs last year, and we've got forward orders for about 400 more. So things aren't changing that much in the market place, just yet.

My local MG dealer has 15 ZS ev's in stock.
Last year when I rang to enquire about one they had, salesman said it had sold.
When I asked about any others, he actually laughed and said "good luck, join the queue".
I bet he's not laughing now.

We've got a number of ZS EV mk1 in stock now, as they've all come in as part exchange against ZS EV mk2, and MG4. Everyone has been waiting months for the ZS EV mk2 deliveries, as they were severely restricted over the past 12 months or so due to semiconductor shortages (and COVID lockdowns in China). Again, I don't think it's indicative of any problems in the used car market, rather it's just a blip caused by the length of time that customers have been waiting to swap to the newer model.

Certainly, used car prices are dropping from the daft levels they got to in 2021 across the board.

You're seeing it from a dealer point of view.
Certainly, you probably have a greater insight into what's going on in the trade, supply etc.
I'm just seeing it from a punters perspective- more choice=lower prices.
Personally I think it has more to do with current electricity prices than anything else.
Yes, a lot may be trade-ins, but anyone already seeing the benefits if EV driving will more than likely buy a new one.
Persuading someone in an ICE it's a good idea to pay top dollar for something that's no longer very much cheaper to run is a hard sell.
Hence the situation that's building.
I'm in the "was driving EV, was priced out of the market, back to ICE for now" brigade.
I was about to pul the trigger on what at first I thought was a cheap Zoe, I've decided to wait it out.

The key thing in 2023 will be that fewer cars in general are going to be bought, simply due to the average household being squeezed with living costs. As you say remove the cost saving in fuel and it's taken another chunk of potential EVers.

Combined with the fact the supply chain is starting to recover and lead times have dropped to few months (even weeks) that were 12-18mths+

Mid 23 and we should see dealers begging for customers to buy and struggling to sell stock.

I just realised that MG have increased the starting prices.

Nine days ago it started at £25,995 and now asking a grand more because 🫰💰

Though looks like Carwow can get them new at ~£26,500 with immediate delivery. I don't think I would personally pay a hundred quid more and it's done 3000 miles 🤔

Shame they increased, we want them cheaper! Hope they don't do an Ora Cat and price themselves out of the market by being greedy.

As I understand it, MG are just loading the nearest dozen or so cars onto a truck at the docks, then taking the driver into the office to throw a dart at a map of dealerships. :cautious:
The dealer I ordered with has apparently handed over a grand total of ONE customer MG4 since September! (not mine)

Starting to get quite a few around where I live within the last couple of weeks, spotted all the colours apart from Black now 😅

I'm still tempted to swap from the MG5 once that finishes, just want more choices to appear to challenge the value/money and looks of the MG4.
