AutoBlogGreen - WAVE 2014 is an EV rally fit for the Alps [w/video]

"Not like we would need an excuse to join a few hundred friends for a springtime plug-in vehicle drive through the Swiss Alps, but the World Advanced Vehicle Expedition (WAVE) is providing us with one. WAVE is putting on its annual shindig between May 31 and June 7, entrant Green Motorsport says, and the party's so big that WAVE's now giving out prizes for three categories: plug-in vehicles that are heavier than 900 kkilograms (1,984 pounds), lighter than 900 kg and electric bikes."

Just booked flights to Zurich for WAVE 2014!!! I am co-driver in a Tesla Roadster. How exciting is that!

More info when we have the web site up and running when I will have more details.

For those that don't know what WAVE is... it is a rally of about 1600km over 8 days starting in Stuttgart, Germany, driving through Germany, Austria and Switzerland and ending near Zurich. It is open only to battery vehicles and motorbikes.

From the web site...

The WAVE – World Advanced Vehicle Expedition is going to start on 30. May 2014 and be the world's largest electric vehicle rally, leading from Baden-Württemberg via Bavaria to the Alps in 10 days with 50 - 70 participating teams from all over the world. The WAVE aims to show that electric mobility powered by renewable energies is available and a great solution for our future mobility.
So, it isn't just a drive. We stop several times a day, to charge yes, but at each stop we are hosted by a local organisation (school, business etc) where we hold PR-type events promoting EVs.

I will not be taking my Leaf as I didn't have a co-driver and in anycase... it would be quite a challenge just to get the car to and from Switzerland let alone then do the WAVE! So I have teamed up with a Tesla Roadster owner instead. I will be co-driver helping out with the web site, blog, twitter, Glympse, photos etc.

Needless to say, this is all very exciting so watch out for more info once the web site is built and we have a team name... any ideas for a team name?

Things are progressing well.

Now that our official entry has been submitted I can now tell you that I am joining Markus Doessegger for the WAVE 2014 as his co-driver in his super-looking Tesla Roadster.

Markus is a Java software specialist living near Zurich, Switzerland. More info on the web site.

I will be helping with all aspects of the trip but particularly things that are not related to the car directly... e.g. I will be the team photographer and blogger, I will be Twittering, answering emails and making sure that Glympse is active and updated. I may do some driving but I don't expect to do much if I do any at all.

It is still 3 months away and so things are still at a very early stage but the web site and blog is now active albeit very much under construction... you will just have to return every week and see what progress we have made :)

Web site & blog : electricbluetesla.org
Twitter : @TeamElectricBlu

I intend to use Glympse throughout the trip from door to door!

I leave my home in Saltash, Cornwall on 29th May...

Train to London Gatwick. In hotel that night ready for 7am flight to Zurich on 30th. I meet Markus at Zurich airport...

We then will join the Tesla Club of Switzerland convoy to Stuttgart when there will be a World Record attempt to have the greatest number of EVs in a single convoy. Last year there were over 300 and it should be bigger this year!

Then we join the WAVE 2014 for 10 days and 1600km around Germany, Austria and Switzerland

On 8th June I fly back to Gatwick, stay overnight and then return to Saltash by train on 9th.

The flights and hotels are booked and I am already very excited at meeting so many EV fans and spreading the message that electric travel is here and now.

Please take a quick look at the web site (there isn't much there at the moment!) and pop in from time to time to see the stuff we add.

Thanks for that Brian. It will be great fun.

Just to put a bit of contrast to the highly sponsored, PR-driven way that Brian is doing the WAVE...

I am co-driver in a privately entered Tesla Roadster owned by Markus Doessegger. He lives near Zurich and I am flying out to meet him, doing the WAVE, and flying back. Ours is a private entry and so not sponsor and PR driven so you will probably see a lot less of us on the PR front. We will have PR events to attend while on the WAVE but we are all required to do that. We will have only one or two small financial sponsors for the event itself and so we are primarily self-funded.

Just a small point about the number of cars in the event...

The WAVE itself is a 1600km trek through Germany , Austria and Switzerland for 100% EV vehicles. There will be about 40-50 vehicles doing the whole trip, not 300 as Brian intimated. However, on the Saturday 31st May there will be a Guinness World Record attempt at the longest EV convoy and this will take place in Stuttgart before the WAVE starts. At that record attempt we are hoping for as many 100% battery vehicles to converge on Stuttgart and to take part in the record attempt. For the record we are expecting well over 300 EVs plus some Hydrogen fuel-cell concept vehicles from Daimler. As they are not 100% battery driven these must start at the back and cannot form part of the record.

It looks like the WAVE is building nearly into a TIDAL WAVE!

There are now 65 teams confirmed for joining the WAVE 2014, including 11 electric motorbike teams. 20 more teams are almost ready to sign-up. The Teams are coming from 12 countries: Switzerland (29), Germany (28), France (9), Austria (6), UK (3), NL (2), Singapore (2), India (1), Italy (1), Slovenia (1), Norway (1) and Czech Republic (1).

Come on... anyone else from the UK... it will be fun!

Just so people know... I asked Brian if he would mind splitting off the Highland Event into its own event as it was getting confusing as this thread is about WAVE. For some reason he has removed all his posts from the thread. Don't ask me why.

Anyway, I am assuming/hoping he will post a new event about his Highland trip soon. :)

As I said earlier, posts about the Highland Charge are like to increase greatly, with just 2 weeks to go before the event. Rather than clog up Speak EV, I've started a blog - its much more flexible and I can drop in photos and videos - at will. Also I can put up the 24/7 tracking (maybe) and provide some exposure from our WAVE backers and sponsors!

See: https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=3497762697290018038#allposts

Highland Charge will take the WAVE principles and objectives to the extremities of Scotland (yes to the Highlands and even the outer Hebrides) - Its the most challenging EV fund raiser ever attempted in UK! However, Highland Charge now seems destined to take a very Scottish message to the core of Europe and on to the main WAVE event (31 May 14 - Stuttgart through Germany, Austria and Switzerland).

Highland Charge is NOT a sponsored event - EV Matters is funding the entire trip. 100% of all money raised will go to Help-for Heroes!

According to Green Car Reports the pesky 'Canucks' are planning to pinch WAVE 2013 World Record for the max number of all-electic vehicles running together, at the same time. Just to make the event more attractive they have rented the Gilles Villeneuve F1 circuit for the day!

The planned date is 19 Apr 14!

The only good news is being Montreal, in Spring - it will probably snow!

http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1091026_most-electric-cars-ever-guinness-world-record-try-in-montreal-next-month

If they pull it off - then the collective European honour will be at stake - UK EV drivers will be invited (probably coerced) to make it to Stuttgart for 31 May 14! Any 'all electric' vehicle will do - bike, scooter - even a Segway!

Damn it - just come for the beer!!!

Based on the first 50 seconds not sure I could stand any more clips "yo!", but what does this guy and his videos have to do with WAVE exactly?!

Guys you will never learn to swim - unless you go in the water!
All the clips are from WAVE - this is the guy who has done WAVE 3 times already and this is the ingenuity required to cross Europe! Let's hope things have improved for 2014, but having seen this I'm forewarned!

I have heard from Markus today that his Tesla Roadster is having its stickers put on this week so we will soon be well ahead of schedule in the Team Electric Blue preparations.

Also our team T-shirts are being ordered up.

The web site / blog is coming along but a lot more to do there I think... that is me so I had better get a move on

We have now decided on our responsibilities on the trip:

Me : internet hotspot (MiFi x 2), Glympse, blog, tweets, team photography, video with 2 x GoPros, navigation

Markus : Driving, charging, keeping the schedule (briefings, events, checkpoints etc) and keeping in touch with people. Actually there is a lot more to that than you might think so he will be kept busy.

I heard today that Glympse have approved them being a partner... not just of our team but possibly of the entire WAVE event so that is great. Wouldn't it be good to have a single Glympse with all the teams on the same map? That probably won't happen and not all the teams will be using Glympse but it might mean that any team that is using Glympse might all be on the same map. Watch this space. I have yet to speak to WAVE management about this so nothing is set yet but at least we know we will have Glympse up and running through the event.

All my hotels and flights are now booked with an extra night booked in Zurich before my return. Who knows... I might get to see a bit of Zurich too.

I have decided to do the trip from my home in Saltash to Gatwick in the Nissan Leaf so I will have Glympse up and running for the entire trip from 29th May until 9th June.

Well Paul - that is your team mate for WAVE 2014 - the guy that Louis Palmer (Director, WAVE Trophy) described as a WAVE-legend! This is the guy who made it to WAVE on 2011 ,12 and 13 and those videos are testament to how he made it, when there was no commercial infrastructure!
The person who decry is Gordon Foat, MD of Green Motorsport Ltd and he has been building EVs for over 10 years. When you arrive by air and by Tesla - you might like to acknowledge that Gordon Foat will arrive in a light-utility EV of his own design and manufacture!
I agree with Louis - this guy is a WAVE legend and these videos are testament to the tenacity of a true-competitor and an exemplary demonstration of the WAVE ideals!
