Hi all,

I've just been away in our ZE EV since collecting it last Friday. Absolutely loving the car, we took out bike away with us (removed the front wheel and placed them in the back) however I'd really like to get the bike mounted on the rear of the car as we plan to go away camping. I know the car has roof rails and they're capable of 75kg of weight. However, I have an electric bike and its heavy lifting it into the back of the car, let alone up onto the roof. I thought about getting a tow bar installed however prior to getting the ZS, I looked into a Zoe, but they're not rated for a tow bar. However as the ZS EV is basically a ZS which can tow. Is there any reason why I couldn't get a tow bar fitted for a tow bar mounted bike rack?

I found the attached image on MG's website and it says 0kg is permitted for towing, however I don't actually intend to tow. I think it answers my question though unless anyone knows otherwise?

There's no law preventing you from fitting a towbar for use as a bicycle rack. What you need to establish is whether the rear chassis outriggers on the EV are the same as the ICE ZS or whether you will need a custom rack.

I would love to know this too. I'm in Australia and really keen to see what my options are legally to fit a tow bar. Obviously the body / chassis structure of the ZS EV at the rear needs to be identical to the ZS (ICE) for fitment. And I won't intentionally breach the warranty. But I really want a tow bar so that I can fit my old School Bike rack.

I found a UK site that suggested the max permissible weight of the ZS (ICE) with a trailer was 2230 Kgs (Max weight for ZS is 1966kg fully loaded passengers and roof luggage etc). If the EV weighs about 1500 Kgs, that still leaves sufficient weight for a trailer and the driver! 50 kg nose weight would also work for a bike rack and bikes.I would stick to those permissible weights.

Surely it's physically possible, warranty and legalities aside!

This is the tow bar I'm looking at in Australia. Apparently the wiring harness for the trailer connect is click and connect anyway. So should be minimal impact on the 12v electrical circuits to the car. Legally you can't install a tow bar in Australia without installing the corresponding wiring. So I would get the whole lot done to meet the legal requirements of the installation!

Now all I need to do is find a licensed tow bar fitter to be prepared to fit it, if and when the car ever actually arrives in Australia!

I appreciate that you are in Aus where laws are different, but in the UK it's not legal to tow with a vehicle not homologated to do so, and the MG ZS EV is not in our market (or the EU). What is the situation in Aus?

It varies from state to state. We have for example, some Kona EV's in NSW that are towing small caravans around, but you can't do that in QLD. I'm in NSW. My dealer said I could fit a tow bar (for the purposes of a bike rack) but once again the risk is certainly with the consumer. If I can legally do it, without instantly voiding my warranty, I might chance it. If too risky, I will look for an alternative. I noticed in the UK they have a tow hitch for carrying different things? I really just want it so that I can have a roof pod on the roof, and the kids bikes (x 3) on the back:
