The difference between 312 miles (that most people expect from Tesla marketing) and 239 miles (that the car is predicting) is huge and yet another Model S surprise

How does that differ from the marketing range of any other BEV in the UK showing the NEDC range being but achievable in the real world?

Tesla quote real world range of much less than 312 miles on their website. The NEDC figure is a legal requirement for all cars sold in the UK to quote and does not necessarily reflect real world performance as shown by the real world numbers quoted by Tesla.

You are no doubt aware of this but I guess it does not suite your current agenda to say so.

I'm comparing the real world experience of driving the Tesla Roadster against the Tesla Model S over a ~180 mile journey that I have driven many times in the last 4.5 years.

I believe the 312 mile NEDC range of the Model S is unachievable unlike the 211 mile NEDC range of the Roadster. My hunch is that the huge weight of the Model S is severely depressing the real world range.

meaningless in legal context... only quoted NEDC range forms part of your contract with Tesla...

So presumably same would go for Leaf quoted at 124 miles range and most manufacturers quoting unachievable mpg figures?

Not at all, I think it's relevant here as Tesla is following standard market practice i.e. if you can replicate NEDC test conditions you will get NEDC range. If you can't you won't - simple.

The NEDC range for the Ampera is actually quoted at 52 miles which is appears to be higher than generally achieved in daily driving.

What mpg is quoted by them in petrol only mode?

As you say ( most Manufacturers). I am pleased to say that Vauxhall give the Ampera range as 30-50 miles.
With mine I achieve 30-50 miles.
