The Tesla Model Y topped the global sales charts for the first quarter of 2023, according to data compiled by automotive industry specialist of Felipe Muñoz of market research firm JATO Dynamics and published by Motor1.

What a great achievement for Electric vehicles, well done Tesla !

Don't tell that to @Splendid Systems, he will get heart attack right in front of his computer 🤣 The other day he was trying to convince everyone that in Australia there is a 5 years waiting time for Toyota hybrid cars 🤣🤣🤣

@Steveabbott Pretty big caveat though. Is the data they have used truly reprepresentative of "global" sales of any make/model? I don't think so.

"The caveat here is this reporting is based on JATO data for 53 markets, official data/forecasts for 31 other markets, and estimates for the rest of the world.

Given the narrow gap between the Model Y and Corolla and the latter’s greater popularity in developing markets, it’s possible the Corolla may still be in pole position."

From the data it looks like more of a best guess. Fair pay to Tesla though, and at least it will keep the chiropractors in business :)

Sorry... I don't believe it. I can't imagine a car starting at £44k up to £60K could be the top-selling car.

I know it is last year but the top-selling last year in the UK (by registrations) was the Vauxhall Corsa followed by the Qashqai. That is much more realistic.

Worldwide the best was the Toyota Corolla followed by the RAV4.

I know that article says that but I think this might be just a load of Tesla PR.

If only the rest of the world could buy the Song Plus.

All the same, if that were the top seller, it'd still be a BEV at the top.

At the current rate, the Model Y should exceed Corolla sales for 2023.
We'll see if they can sustain sales for the Model Y, which is doubtful.

Tesla has shown its first signs of decline in Europe. Their sales went down despite larger inventories. Q1 2023 sales were below Q4 2022.
Europe sales: • 94,819 in Q4 2022 • 93,784 in Q1 2023

Inventory is building early in Q2 suggesting a decline in sales and overproduction. Tesla would typically start a quarter with zero inventories, but not this quarter, suggesting that demand is not following.

This is also a problem when you start getting in the news with price cuts. Everyone in the market for a Tesla is now waiting for the next price cut.

Tesla European inventories: Tesla inventory volumes in Europe indicate potential upcoming price cut

Another thing I would like to point out is an apparent collapse of Tesla BEV market share in European markets, suggesting increasing fragmentation in the market.

@Paul_Moxhay The UK new car market is not representative of much larger markets like the US or China.

Throw into the mix that Tesla Model Y qualifies for a federal tax credit of $7,500 in the US, plus you've got Hertz and Uber who have taken tens of thousands of Teslas, and it's not hard to see why the Model Y is selling so well in many countries.

Based upon the discounts in 2023, apparently Tesla cars made and sold in China are up to 50% cheaper than the same cars sold in the US/Europe.

New cars sold in the UK (Tesla or otherwise) are much more expensive here than in many markets, so the price you pay for a Model Y here, is going to be much more expensive than the price an American or Chinese consumer would pay.

Having said that, I live in a "deprived" part of London and yet brand new Model Ys are popping up everywhere since March 2023 deliveries began. Common as muck.

They should cut down the price of color if anything. Seems every Tesla I see is white...

It is a shame as I have seen a couple of nice metallic greys one a M3 one a model Y which lift the design a lot. White rarely does anything for any car frankly.
The Y in particular is a strange looking car but then running an EQC and waiting on an EQE who am I to judge as neither of those have much to recommend them design wise either🤣
