Is this another lab scale development that won't work for the mass market?

Sounds interesting and I am sure there are many lab-scale developments that would work in the mass market, but take so much time and effort to get ready for market that it comes too late at too high a cost.

Perfecting existing tech seems to have got us to a price point that seems satisfactory for the current market. So the question is, really, an economic one not a scientific one: If you are a battery or VM, do you fund research to look for a solution to a problem which doesn't really exist? The answer is 'yes' but that is a long-game approach, looking for technology which may slowly move into the market much later.

However, there is so much funny-money around at the moment that some start-up might get an investment round tomorrow, make the tech work, and offer new battery tech in years not decades.

Still .. if there is VC money for that is nonetheless an economic question too.
