There is nothing stopping someone writing down their car pin, as without the key it is useless. There just needs to be a reasonable likely that anyone trying to steal a car will find that is not written on a postit note in the car.

Yes, but people + passwords is a known weak link in any security. And for cars used by more than one person, even just in for servicing, a PIN will be a problem unless it's written in plain sight.

The motion thing seems eminently sensible, especially as it should prolong battery life as well.

Not really. It can be toggled on and off.

For instance if only needs to be set of parking in a dodgy area, rather then your garage.

If you know you are parking in a dodgy area (hotel, visiting office?) then your key is unlikely to be available to use the relay trick on.
It's parked at home that is the main problem with the key in a more or less known position on the other side of a wall.
