Hi there

My 7kW charger will be installed next week, but will be running it at 3.6kW until my fuse is upgraded from 60A to 100A.
Before the upgrade UKPN require my meter tails to be changed to 25mm.
My supplier is Bulb and they want to charge £120 for this. Does anyone know of any supplier that does this for free? Do any of the green suppliers such as Ecotricity? Thankyou!

I believe officially only your supplier is allowed to open your smart meter to fit the tails. My Octopus engineer said he fit 25mm tails when installed smart meter but turns out they were 16mm and I only knew when UKPN turned up to change mains fuse to 100A. Instead of UKPN coming back again they said they had just been authorised to open smart meters so changed the tails and then the fuse. All for free. Could take a risk and see if UKPN will do it but might have just been the engineers I had?

Interesting - unfortunately UKPN have a photo of my set up - so HQ already know the tails are 16mm.
it’s a bit of a dilemma - where I am Bulb have the cheapest overnight rate for the EV, but a £120 charge for the tails potentially wipes out any savings if I switch to a more expensive supplier who will fit them for free...

Fwiw bulb said they'd charge me £100 for an isolator switch. They never did. Then when I left they messed up my change of supplier meter reading, which resulted in a massive refund from them and a huge first bill from the new (cheaper) supplier. I don't think they know what they are doing, but I m not complaining...

Hi, what rate are you getting from Bulb for gas and electric? I switched to Octopus as Bulb had nothing at the time for EV's

Is it 16mm between both you service fuse and your meter and your meter and you isolator/CU?

My preferred solution would be to get an isolator switch fitted (some suppliers seem to do this for free, or a nominal charge). Then you can get any electrician in to upgrade the tails to 25mm². Suppliers tend to give better prices than a local electrician for this type of stuff, TBH, as it's a simple and quick job, where the overhead element (travelling, picking up stock, etc) is going to be a fair bit of the price for any electrician, whereas the suppliers pretty much only do this type of work, so will always have reels of 25mm tails on their vans, as they use the stuff several times a day, every day.
