New Charging network launching with Q Park UK

I am pleased to announce that we have recently come to an agreement with Q Park to supply, install and operate fast (22KW) charging points across their 60 car parks. The new network will launch in February 2016, starting in Liverpool ONE and Manchester First st car parks. The network will be payable and users can access the network through our customer web portal, telephone and RFID cards (subscription only). The network will be the first in the UK to offer a one off payment at point service and this will be available through our web portal.

I look forward to receiving drivers comments and advice on the network. We anticipate initially installing 2 charging points per location.

Many thanks.

I am a novice or rookie when it comes to my PHEV, so when I visited Liverpool I prepaid and booked a space at the Liverpool One parking facility so that I could use the charging facilities onsite run by Franklin Energy there I had full expectation to use it. However as a newbie I was not aware that I had to provide a charging cable as well as all the other chargers I have used previously were the rapid chargers (with attached cables). It cost me £48.00 for the period of parking and I was unable to use the charging station, so a waste of money as I could have I was not told by either Franklin Energy or Q Park that a cable was required. There are posters around Liverpool One advertising the charging stations, but no mention of a required cable ( for novices like me). Emails complaining were sent on my return but not the responses I would have expected......
Hi Simon,

I believe 99% of public AC Fast charging requires the driver to provide their own cable. Please take this on board when charging in the future.

Many thanks.
To follow up on my own post, I did eventually manage to get some charge later in the evening when the Ampera moved on, thankfully at 6.6kw from the 22Kw capable post. If my Leaf had been the 3.3kw model, I would have been in real difficulty.

Reading back in this thread, I see that Q Park have stated that Franklin is not allowed to paint the spaces with EV markings and instead have to rely on movable bollards. I'm afraid that this means that the charging facility is too much of a gamble to rely upon for BEV drivers like me with a round trip distance of over 100 miles, exceeding the car's range. The spaces are in a prime location directly next to the John Lewis entrance and without proper signage are an invitation to be ICEd.

To make matters worse, the right hand space is extremely narrow and therefore even more liable to be blocked. There was already a Zoe waiting for the one usable space when I arrived at 6:30pm on a Thursday, not exactly peak time. Given the lack of space, perhaps a rapid would have been more suitable, as at least it lends itself more to queuing. Also, some instructions by the chargers on the correct procedure to start the charging process would have been useful.

I regularly use destination charging in Manchester, and there the extensive CYC network gives plenty of Plan B and C options, but currently Liverpool One is too much of a single point of failure for comfort.
Hi Jeremy,

You'll be glad to hear we will soon be adding further charging points to Liverpool ONE site. We will also be switching over to a new slicker front end platform in time for implementing the tariff at the beginning of September. We are keen to get feedback on the new customer interface/ smart phone app.

Q Park are responsible for ensuring the bays are kept clear and for PHEV/ EVs only. Unfortunately we have no control over this as we do not own or operate the car park.

We will also be installing a further charging point on Jamaica St in the Baltic Triangle area of Liverpool in the next 6 months.

Many thanks.

See Chargemaster got London, I thought Robert you where hoping to roll out nationwide?
The Chargemaster London deal has come about due to the existing hardware found in Q Parks Westminster sites originally funded by Source London. The additional 40+ sites outside of London will fall under Franklin Energy LiFe charging network.

We will soon be adding new charging points to Q Park Belfast and Q Park Glasgow.

We will soon be sending a survey out to all of our registered customers on their experience and feedback from charging at Q Park/ Franklin Energy charging points. We are keen to hear whether you have previously parked in Q Park or whether the location of the charging point is driving you to Q Park sites rather than the car park itself, i.e. without the charging point at L1 would you normally park at Q Park or look to park at an alternative car parking site.

This will be sent out during week commencing 29th August.

Many thanks.
Robert @Robert Byrne really pleased to hear on your progress.
Going well by the sound of things.

I have since purchased a cable for the Outlander for future use, however I am more pee'd off the fact that even over the phone with both Q Park and Franklin Energy there was no mention that a cable would be required to utilise the charging facility, not on the website or on literature around Q Park. Don't assume things, especially when it comes down to customers, we are all different, and because I was a novice at charging I was unaware that I would need to supply a cable. Enough said!
@Simon Wardle I can understand your frustration but i do think it is directed at the wrong person.
I dont ever recall a Leaf or other BEV owner getting into the situation you have and posting it on this forum. I may be wrong.
I researched lots before venturing "out" in my Leaf, maybe with an Outlander you dont have to as there is the safety net of the ICE. However the situation you found yourself in was of your own making.

How long were you parked up for to cost £48? An overnighter? Hopefully @Robert Byrne has reimbursed you for the cost of the charging you never used.
It was parked up from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon, but the only tariff suitable for me was the Friday -Monday rate of £48. I only paid for the parking, the charge was offered free by Franklin Energy as it was going to be my first charge at Liverpool One. It wont happen again.......it was an expensive parking weekend thats for sure.

I think a few of us are confused as to why you would pay lots more in parking for a quids worth of electricity. At best it would save you a fiver of petrol.
Still now you've a cable you can make the most of what destination charging there is. If you can get your workplace to install a point then there's gains to be had there too.

It's cheaper to park up at the Seacombe ferry terminal (free parking, free charging) and get the ferry. Not ideal for everyone, but recommended for visitors to Liverpool.

In my experience, Q-Park has some of the most expensive parking in the UK.

Looks like the Seacombe ferry might be a better way to visit the Albert Dock and Tate Modern etc then.

I can't find the page with the straight fares list. It's all the River cruises.

Changing their charge points in London from Source London will mean that more people will be trying to use the awful Polar app, because Chargemaster have an aversion to handing out RFID cards to paying customers (unless they're paying lots). Given that Chargemaster don't want to pay for posting RFID cards to infrequent users, they could take a page out of Chargepoint Genie's book and allow users to register any RFID card to use their service.

Many of Q-Park's locations in London are underground car parks, with no mobile signal.

Personally, I've only once used a Q-Park in London; they're pretty much the most expensive place to park in London. I was once charged £6.50 for the privilege of finding out that the underground car park was full, and was in there for under 5 minutes, and the attendant didn't want to waive it.

So, good luck, Franklin Energy. If you get to sign up any other site hosts, I may find a use for your charge points. Q-Park are not my favourites.

I asked for a polar card and got it straight away so maybe they've become less useless since you tried to get yours?

I'd have asked for a refund on that as there is a grace time with all private car parks. Plus you didn't park. Report them to the BPA too. It's in the BPA code of practice.

I applied to get a polar card for my local Asda, and got one straight away... Even with 6months free usage on it....
Chargemaster sent me a Polar card in the mail after I had to ring them up for a remote start.

I went online and got one that way....as soon as the 6 months has expired I will cancel my account as I don't want to spend £7.75 per month for only using once or twice a month....

I have another card for CYC which is free for 12 months.....
