These are the new cameras that enforce speed and using the hard shoulder when not instructed to do so by the matrix and speed signs.... (Pictures taken by a Trucker and used on another social media site!) They are the new radar, working at variable speeds and 70mph. They replace the Gatso's behind the boards and don't require white marker lines. They are harder to spot unless you know what to look for... They are now active as I've seen more than one flash... lets be careful out there....

there!

I thought all speed cameras had to be painted yellow? Are you sure these are enforcement cameras and not just monitoring?

No there is no requirement for them to be painted yellow (they are termed safety cameras), for instance all the grey boxes on gantries on the motorway are 'speed' cameras.

Indeed the Gatsos near Hyde are painted green to blend in with the trees. How DARE anyone even suggest it's about raising revenue!

Apparently the law changed in 2007, so they don't have to be yellow any more.
