Ok I knew it would be a matter of time before this became a bad idea I just did not realise how quickly it would become such.

Today I received two calls while parked at a ecotricity charger, the first was from a gentleman who wanted to know about the car, while I am happy to discuss it at the charger, not while I am sitting down with a friend having a coffee, when I explained I was busy he seemed to get quite short with me as if I left the number there for people to ring and ask me questions.

The second was from a young man, I suspect one of a large number boarding a nearby coach who said "nice car mate bet you have a small ****" and hung up. Given he did not block his number I did not call him back just blocked it from ringing me again.

Two in a day - I am done.

So until Paul gets Chargebump going I am going to use the tesla supercharger app (that works with any charger not just telsa ones) there will be a QR code in my window, if you want to reach me you need to download the app and scan my code, it will then message me

I am pretty sure it will stop prank calling but will be more inconvenient for people trying to reach me.

App is here https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/superchargerqr/id866761029?mt=8

Saw this coming and tweeted about it. Chelsea Sexton replied and said it doesn't happen from their US experience, but in the UK it was just bound to happen! :(

How will the app stop people prank-calling though, I mean, it will be an app alert, but does it stop people from "prank requesting" anonymously?

Just talking ChargeBump today. For the most part the iOS version works, but it's the final third that's the hardest and most important. Keep thinking of different scenarios as you go whereby it's not as simple as you might at first think (in terms of a nice, easy interface/idiot proof usage).

Paul it just sends a message that someone wants to reach you, yes it wont stop anonymous messages but the FAF of downloading the app will put 99% off

Sorry to hear that @jontracey that really sucks :( People are so crappy sometimes.

ANOTHER good reason for putting chargers at the back of carparks instead of right at the front....

You need to get Tesla to add an extra feature to the remote control app - to squirt the washer jets all around the car...

Oh come on, you've got to be tempted to sign that mobile number up for Viagra, sex toys, double glazing, PPI claims etc.

Or is it just me feeling evil?

I find it difficult to think you would have got anything else. Some pleople are Dicks and it seems that the level if dickishness is directly related to the amount of time such a person has to act out their stupid bahaviour!

At the most, I would probably leave an email address. As this requires the most time input from the enquiring person whilst not increasing my response time.

Once all these QR code apps become popular, it will still be a two click process to send you some spam. Writing an email on a mobile device still requires some sort of time on the spammers behalf.

Especially if I make the address: [email protected]teslachallenge.co.uk

:D

Wouldn't it simply be better if the Ecotricity charging station had a displayed timer on it that showed how much time was left on the paid charge session? (Of course, there is no usage fees involved, and that's half the problem.) That way everyone knew when the charging station would next be available.

Not really, because if it said 2 hours and you NEED a charge, the opportunity to contact owner of said car could be worth its weight in lithium.

It would be such a shame if Jon accidentally published the number on here or twitter and a couple of hundred people ACCIDENTALLY messaged jealous small penis guy.

How would you expect that conversation to proceed?... "Hello, I know that your paid charging session will not end for another 20 minutes, but would you mind coming back to your car to stop your charge so that I can use the charger? I have this really important thing." I really doubt that these conversations would happen at all once people can see how long the wait will be and they know that they're waiting on someone who has paid for their time.

Thats a shame Jon, sadly people are people...some kind of app is a good idea though and will stop most plonkers bothering, someone penned gay on the back of my leaf in the dust it just made me laugh to be honest, if people are going to do something I would rather silly pranks than running their keys down the side this can be a problem wigh prestige cars. Hope u are enjoying the car though.

If free or charging by kWh then it's no skin off anyone's nose to pause for a 10/20 minute top-up.

If you needed 10-20 minutes to get to the next charger but the occupant is going to be charging for an hour it would do no harm to politely request to cut in for a while.

Besides, you're making the assumption they will charge to full or "charge completion", but they may only be taking a 10 minute top up.

Unless you mean for chargers to change and to have set times on display, so you pay for a time and it counts down, like parking meters, but that's not how they work at the moment in my experience.

I might specify contact by text only on the very odd occasion I might be charger blocking and screen it that way.
Of course if you would like to provide the misguided youths mobile number I will ring it, probably fairly early of a weekend and ask for his father, pointing out nicely to either that offensive phone calls over the telecommunications system can result in a criminal conviction. Not the first time I have won that battle :)

Much as I am tempted I have deleted it so that next time I have had one beer to many I don't decide against good judgement to call him back :)
