Last time wasn't there a limited number of grants at the old rate available? Because even if it's valid for 9 months if that pot of money runs out you wouldn't get it.
Are you thinking of the US system?

IIRC last time around a deadline for new applications was set with a month's notice with a maximum pot of money for these. That pot ran out about 2 weeks early, so the grant was changed at that point (and removed from PHEVs). All orders pre-registered before the announcement were honoured for up to 9 months. If you Google it, there's a gov.uk press release which explained this at the time.

Whether the same setup will apply the next time the grant is changed, who knows?

Yeah, that's it. So there will be a mad rush to register, call your dealer 5 seconds after the budget is announced.

Indeed, or if you already have an order in place, get the dealer to confirm it's been pre-registered on the grant portal.

? ...and anything you want to replace it with will be more expensive too...
maybe, although they usually adjust the car prices to the grants, in other words, the higher the grant, the more they push the prices up. A car will always be priced (total cost after grants) at what they research that will give them the sales they need. If there was a £10k grant, I can assure you that the list price of many current ev's would easily be 6-8k higher
