Maybe this is old news to the owners who have had their cars longer but I just recently found out that if the lights have come on automatically because the wipers are past a certain setting on the intermittent or switched on then the panel dimmer has no effect on the instrument light level, they stay at the standard 'lights off' brightness.

On the three day test drive I was out and about on the first day and got a real shock when suddenly all the panel lights and instruments went to almost off. It was very disconcerting when you think what has happened to the power, needless to say it was just the automatic lighting kicking in and the panel dimmer had been set right down.
