Partner EV serial connection for fault finding

Hi there, I have a serial comms cable on my Allied Partner EV. Can anybody help with how to interrogate with the windows XP laptop that I have read about on the forum?
My Tepee cuts out after random xx miles and I am presuming a dodgy cell??
