Hi. I'm looking at getting a MG electric, however I rent and am not allowed to add any permanent fixtures. Is there going to be any way of charging my vehicle without installing a charger to a wall?

You could simply use a regular 3-Pin socket and granny cable to charge slowly, or even public chargers. See Zap Map to get an idea of what public options are available in your area.

If you have a driveway have you tried talking to the landlord? It’ll be something people need soon enough and maybe there can be an agreement eg if you pay for all/a portion

Define permanent.

There is no reason why a charge point couldn't be added by having the meter tails split and a temporary install done from there. If you are luck enough to have an isolator switch in the meter box then this is very easy for a sparky to do and remove later. However, your landlord may be unwilling for you to make any alterations, even temporary, to the electrics as they are responsible for their safety - you'll only know if you negotiate as suggested above.

Using a 3-pin "granny" charger can work, particularly if you do low mileage and the wiring in the house is up to a good standard. There's an ongoing debate on this forum about their safety which is never going to be resolved - suffice to say don't use anything other than a specialist extension lead if at all, and check the plug and socket for signs of overheating regularly.

Public charging is an option, but is relatively costly and unreliable. :devilish: Some have managed it long-term, but having your own charging makes it so much easier.

Good luck.

Add an outdoor socket and use a 3 pin. They won’t notice it.

Noooooo
loads of reasons not to do this! You need to make sure your electrics are up to scratch you cant just plonk in another socket and hope you dont burn the place down!

Best solution is to ask the Landlord to install an ev point... sell the benefits as an investment... if he wont do the full chargepoint, ask him to put in a commando socket on a dedicated circuit. (which is cheaper)... you then just install an ohme on a commando socket. You really want to try to draw 32A on a dedicated circuit... its the best solution for you.

If you can afford it, offer to share costs as the last negotiation point.

DO NOT just add an outdoor 3pin socket behind his back. If it aint done right you will be risking a house fire. If you installed behind his back you become liable NOT him and his insurance!

The problem with this approach is there is new legislation for Landlords to maintain electrics to the latest standards.

Not sure what the penalty is if you break these rules. But just fitting a socket for charging a car would probably make the place non-compliant.

That happens at random anyway IME. I quickly learned that doing what I liked and not leaving a forwarding address was the most efficient approach to renting.

I came to view deposit loss as a sunk cost of doing business in this way, no big deal in the grand scheme of things.

YMMV ;)

I know who you are. I know what you've done. I don't have money to fix it. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you fix it now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.
