Anyone able to supply a known working one from a retired unit?
Would like to bring our EV charger back to life, and it's apparently not in stock new thanks to the chip shortage thing.

I read a while back about someone binning a couple of working Rolecs because they wouldn't charge a zoe.
They refused to believe any explanations about earthing.
Last I heard they were replacing one of them.

I'll see if I can find the post, they might be interested in selling for cheaps.

I'll put you in touch if they want less than how much?

Have you tried ecoharmony.co.uk. They do the Viridian replacement controller for the Rolec. Different grades of unit as more expensive versions are more compliant with electrical standards for todays installations.

@MarkyM I did check out the Viridian controller. While it looks to be in stock, I'm concerned that if it's not exactly the same there's a danger I may not wire it up correctly. My electrical skills are ok up to doing a completely like for like swap, but any changes would be fun I could do without. There are a lot of wires to connect up and the controllers aren't cheap!
I suspect I may be forced (due to supply issues) to feel that fear and do it anyway...

It's quite expensive if you only need dumb charging and the standards aren't retrospective anyway. I've also got a vague notion that the Viridian controllers don't properly run the Rolec light display... hopefully someone will correct this statement if I'm wrong.

Now we have brought back to life 1 Rolec by using the same components from another Rolec, I would tend to agree with you. Plug & Play etc. I am also hoping Rolec get some new Mode 3 Controller units in and do not price gouge them,if they are in short supply.
We were advised by the electrician to get a Qube EV charger as a replacement for our Rolec if we couldn’t get it working. On further research this is also made by Rolec! After all the issues we have had with ours I would not trust Rolec at all. We feel their business model is to build sub standard equipment and then make a tidy living supplying spare parts!

As far as I understand, the only complication is that you'll need to replace the LED if fitting the Viridian because polarity is reversed...

Unfortunately, it appears that the Rolec branded mode 3 comm's module ACSE0020 has now been discontinued as I understand it.
I was on the look out for one about 6 weeks ago ( to use as a spare ).
Looking on-line, they where either showing as £80 but "out of stock" or a totally "discontinued" item.
Then I received a tip off that a electrical supplier had 6 of them in stock, but they where a lot more expensive at over £100.
I quickly placed an order and about five hours later, they had ALL sold out !.
News travels fast I guess.
It appears that it's the same comm's unit in the 16 amp version.

Circuit component Font Rectangle Transparency Brand

You could keep an eye out on Ebay for a used 16 amp unit, as these can be a little less popular.
The next item that will become difficult to obtain in the future will the Rolec contactor module at around £13.00 at the moment.
Here is a link to a almost new 7 Kw 32 Amp tethered unit, it will need a Type 2 adaptor or your Type 2 cable switching over from your old unit.
Worth a cheeky offer I think, as this could really work out cheaper than replacing the parts in your unit, IF you can locate them !.
Then you have the spares you need from your older original unit, or maybe re-list the case / cable etc instead to recoup your costs ?.

Sounds like they're not people to remove the controller from the innards, maybe they'd like to sell the unit as a whole?
The lady who rented the house said her landlord threw it in the rubbish bin having fitted a new one. She then put it in the recycling bin which was emptied a day before they discovered the zoe still spat out it's dummy when her friend tried to charge at her place.
So there's a working Rolec sitting at the nearest landfil unless they actually did recycle it but whatever they did it's gone.
:(
Sorry if I got your hopes up.
I have put the feelers out just in case someone on the same forum want's to unclutter a shelf but it is a bit of a long shot, even here.

Good luck,

We design and manufacture something similar

EPC V2, uses common Annode LED's so should work.

Thanks

We can also help with supply of electrical components, such as contactors, RCBO's ect.

We have a tethered version of our EPC, you would need to change the LED - Lead time 3-4 weeks

Viridian EV EVSE Protocol Controller Tethered 16A/32A

Our EPC V2 - you won't need to change the LED and can also add 6mA protection to your charge point if it dosn't ahve it

You can also use discount code Welcome10 to save 10% off your first order

Thanks

Hi David - Can I ask, are your comm's units 100% compatible / interchangeable with the original branded Rolec comm's units ?.
Are there ANY wiring changes required, when installing the Viridian unit in lieu of the original Rolec tethered branded wall box unit ?.
As there is a three coloured LED warning light on the front cover.
Thanks in advance of your reply.

I contacted evonestop.co.uk which is Rolec's partner brand/shop front. Still no Mode 3 controllers in stock but she was adamant they would be arriving in May. Although this is the second time I have called and have been told "they are expected in 3 weeks time" each time. But still not in stock.

Hi Carty,

Its not a direct swap as the terminals are labelled slightly differently. However it uses the same communication wires such as CP and PP

Our EPC also needs configuring to let it know if its a tethered charger or socket. This is done via a dipswitch underneath the lid.

The External LED output is located under the lid and needs a 4 pin JST connector which we can supply as well.

The attached manual should hopefully be useful. The wiring diagram/example shows how to wire our EPC. The Auxilarly contactor section is only used if you are using PEN fault protection. and it also contains how to wire a 6mA sensor.

we are able to provide phone support if you ahve any issues with the wiring or set up.

Thanks
David

Honestly, I will be surprised if they arrive at all.
I believe they are a discounted item.
They where used in the early dumb wall boxes that Rolec produced and all units NOW have to be Smart units.
Maybe this is why they have been discontinued?.
