Hi

I have done a search but it doesn't seem to have come up. My petrol car (safety blanket!) is sitting in the drive unused and unloved. While I could go through all the SORN faff, it would be more useful to keep it on a limited-mileage policy and usable if required (e.g. forgot to charge the Leaf - has happened once!).

I see Admiral are best for multicar, but wondering if anyone has any other recommendations? I can't see me doing more than 1000 miles in the year in the petrol, if that. However, the "specialist" policies are all geared towards proper classics rather than old family hatchbacks :)

Adrian Flux quoted me nearly £900 on multicar, a couple of specialist brokers (adelaide and bewiser) quoted stilly figures and two more whose names escape me now just didn't reply.

Any recommendations for an insurer who will consider the NCB that is in use on my Leaf against a second, very limited, car?

We are with Allianz for our car insurance. I had a business van which I sold when we bought the Leaf. I had my NCD on the Transit van and most car insurers don't accept swapping NCD from a commercial vehicle. What Allianz offered was a "mirroring" of our existing max NCD on our car insured with them, effectively giving us the same discount for the second car. After 12 months without a claim we will then have 2 x max NCD to be free to insure wherever we want.

Prices for us were excellent: me 58, wife 48, both with one no-fault accident in the last 5 years. Both cars insured for approx. 12,000 mile p.a. (no cheaper to request lower mileage either!)
Passat Alltrack - £190 fully comp, protected NCD
Leaf - £170

This "mirroring" was a newish feature earlier this year that was not available through brokers, etc. only direct through them.

Worth a try?

We're with Admiral multicar. Before calling them to add the LEAF to our policy, I used their site to get a new quotation.

As we're now a 3 car (2 driver) family (trusty Espace is currently parked up for emergency use!) I spent hours on their site looking at permutations of cars / main drivers / NCB / mileage.

At the end of it it looked my premium was going to be about £500 to add the LEAF.

When I made the call made the changes, they added the LEAF for under £170 (and that included change of address and adding a speeding ticket!). I couldn't change the main drivers and NCB around as the policy was already 2 months old.

All in all I was very happy adding the LEAF for such a small increase in premium.

As an aside. if you are with Admiral multicar, their "alterations to an existing policy" call centre struggled to understand that we would be 3 cars and 2 drivers. I ended up calling the New Customer line, explaining what I was trying to do, and then they transferred me to someone who knew what they were doing!

Great, thanks guys - I had an online quote from admiral but it was a little steep so will try the phone call approach as MRH seems to have had luck with! Will also try the Allianz approach ...

If you phone fora new quote of an evening the calls often get routed to North America - and they are very helpful.

Hope it all goes well.

When I bought my second car I went to my existing insurer who matched my existing NCB on the new policy for the second car, this was several years ago now and may no longer be available but worth a try. Then come renewal you just shop around as usual but with a decent NCB.

Yeah, I am with Aviva (Leaf was added on for a reasonable sum this year) but they want over £750 for the renewal which seems excessive given that I can only drive one car at a time.

Mind you, just did an online Allianz one and they want £2500. I sense that I am unwanted by the insurers for some reason ...

Phone tomorrow it will have to be, would imagine they'd be embarassed quoting that over the phone!

Mine was over the phone...the online systems do not always cope well with circumstances that do not fit preset criteria.

Good luck.

Hi Just had my renewal on my Ampera. Drivers, Me, wife, two sons, £165.50 full N.C.B. with Aviva. The wife has bought a 2012 Leaf this week, Drivers Wife,Me, Two sons, £256.00. also with Aviva. You may find that if you add another driver to the policy, if they aren't too young, you may find the premium is less. G.T.

Tried the parents and they put the premium up - oh how we laughed that they are now into their liability years ...
