Most likely need to remove the airbag to access the plugs for the buttons. Quite straightforward once you figure out the airbag. Google VW airbag removal and you should find something useful.
It's really quite easy. Hardest bit is being able to turn the wheel to gain access to the release tabs. If not removing the wheel you may even be able to do it without unplugging the airbag.
