Hey!

Finally got a tethered wall point installed in the carport after everyone’s great help here

I know with the granny charger (particularly with any extension) it’s best practice to fully uncoil the lead

Does this still apply to tethered 7KW home chargers? Right now where we park is within 2 meters and the cable comfortable reaches without uncoiling.

Can leaving the excess cable coiled around the charger cause issues? Is it best practice to fully uncoil?

Uncoiling leads is to prevent heat build up from resistive losses in the cable, it makes it easier for any heat to dissipate.
If this is a typical Pod Point / Rolec / Chargemaster unit with the lead loosely coiled round it then I do not think it will matter. This is quite unlike a tightly coiled extension lead where the inner coils can not lose heat easily and hence overheat and melt, this is what the warnings are about.

If your worried then charge for an hour or so and see if the cables are heating up significantly. They ought to warm a bit - 7kW is 30A or so, a substantial current.

I did exactly that and none of it was what I would call too warm at all. And the car was pulling 7.1 pretty much the whole time

A tethered charge point cable simply isn’t long enough even if it’s tightly coiled for heat to build up sufficiently @ 7kW to cause any issues.

My friend has a taycan and a 22kW charge point he only pays out the cable needed, when he plugs it in.

That’s never melted, I really wouldn’t worry!
