I was always fascinated by the possibilities of EV's ..and took the plunge in 2008 with an engineering R&D side project (AKA hack :) ) of a turning perfectly good smart car initially into an EV and later into a PHEV.
Smart ev (1).jpg

I got 'an EV specialist' to carry out most of the conversion work ...

to my spec (a 'hidden conversion', based on Lead acids into the battery ready sandwich floor.. ) .. it got 25 miles range and 60Mph top speed (like most ev's not simultaneously tho' :).
The ultimate aim was developing a PHEV .. using industry standard parts with small mods (rather than developing everything from scratch as the big auto co's do) to make a 'low cost PHEV' .. this was done with 2x Zyvan standard chargers and a 7Kw standard £700 genset

Amazingly, like all good R&D hacks, it worked !! in normal west London stop-start traffic the genset was more than capable of filling in toughs of energy taken from the battery, but constant speed above about 35mph gradually ran down the battery ... like a REX.
I did 3000 fun miles (at noddy speeds) in this car mainly just EV as I never managed to silence the genset .. (bloody deafening !! )

Ahhh the joys of battery changes ! a few cells needed swapping out ( it rained too ! )

Eventually the original EV conversion (5 years on) became more and more problematical, especially integration with the original smart CANbus (another 'standard' that many auto co's seem to bastardise) .. it began to suck way too much time, just on maintenance - So I sold it last October - I guess it is now running around the Krakow area, in Poland .. with an EV electronics and CANbus wizzard :)

My Next EV was (and is) 2 wheeled ! another R&D project, this time made real ... Mando Footloose which I guess could be classed as a human PHEV http://www.mandofootloose.com/

And normally, the fancier the alloys the more difficult they are to clean.

Haha. Funnily enough on Friday the tyre fitter said to me "the alloys look great but are going to be harder to keep clean" Nope, I have regenerative braking I told him :) hehe.

Why? Not paying road tax? Errrr... Hang on!
The ActiveE was a limited run prototype with a fixed lifespan - nearly all 1200 cars went the same way. I'm sure one or two still exist but their work is done...

About 140 still live in the DriveNow car sharing program in San Francisco... Additionally some (unknown quantity) also exist in DriveNow Berlin (not sure about other German DriveNow cities).

I'm sure my ActiveE was crushed though. With 54,321 miles when I returned the car to BMW in February, it was the highest mileage in the Weat Coast, at the time.
