Discussion Starter #1 (Edited)
I purchased a Tesla Roadster on 1st July 2010.

Unfortunately, during the last four years I have grown increasing concerned about battery range loss despite raising the issue with Tesla many times (see #1 below for details). Today the range is still falling and stands at 159 ideal miles in standard mode and 199 ideal miles in range mode after driving 55,519 miles.

By way of comparison, five UK Roadster owners have recently reported ideal range from 179-190 miles in standard mode (see #4 below for details) which is close to the range quoted by Tesla when new - 194 ideal miles in standard mode and 245 ideal miles in range mode.

The Plug In America Roadster Battery Study (here) notes considerable variation amongst vehicles but also states “an average loss of about 3.7 ideal miles of range (1.6%) per 10,000 miles driven” which is roughly 20 miles after 55,000 miles. Clearly my current range degradation at 45 miles would not normally be expected until 100,000 miles according to this study.

After eight weeks at the London workshop recently, the Tesla senior manager of engineering in Deer Creek wrote “we have determined that there has been no abnormal degradation with respect to your vehicle’s battery and that it is operating within normal operating parameters”.

Following on from this I have been unable to obtain a statement from Tesla on what range loss would trigger a Roadster battery repair. Indeed, the Roadster Battery Extended Service Agreement explicitly excludes battery degradation stating “Failure means a complete failure of the Battery due to defects in material or workmanship of any battery manufactured or supplied by Tesla that occur under normal use. Failure does not include the gradual reduction in operating performance of the battery due to normal wear and tear”.

The three year Roadster Vehicle ESA (here) and Roadster Battery ESA (here) cost a total £13,000 In October 2013.

Logs from the UK cars (see #3 below for details) highlight the difference in CAC behaviour and IMO clearly indicate a fault with brick #8. The challenge now is to convince Tesla to do something about this long term problem.

If you already own or are considering a Tesla Roadster I would strongly suggest you investigate the issues surrounding battery degradation. I also suggest everyone records logs on a regular basis because it’s only a matter of time until you will need them.

Unfortunately for me time has run out and my regular trips are already beyond the range of my Roadster today :(

(1) My Tesla Roadster Battery History

1st November 2011 - email from Tesla Service “We have notice that a component within your battery has started to work outside the recommended parameters and as a consequence we would like to replace it at your earliest convenience. This operation will take five working days and will need to be brought into our London workshop.”

3rd December 2011 - car returned to me following battery repair.

19th April 2012 - email to Tesla Service “Range seems to have tailed off a lot recently… I did a performance mode charge with no improvement. Can I send you the logs for analysis?”

27th April 2012 - email from Tesla Service “Our technical team are looking into the range issue you have experienced lately.”

8th May 2012 - Tesla Service visit my home and undertake some battery analysis.

30th May 2012 - email to Tesla Service “Further to your recent visit I can confirm that the range has remained depressed following the battery work late last year.”

June - October 2012 - worked with Tesla Service trying different charging regimes but range problems persisted.

10th October 2012 - battery bleed resistors replaced at Tesla workshop.

18th April 2013 - email to Tesla Service “I also think I've lost about 10% battery capacity now I've driven just over 40,486 miles… is this typical?”

22nd April 2013 - email from Tesla Service “The battery concerns you have will need further investigation as you rightly point out, we would need to look at the log data, carry out a bleed test and the imbalance.”

13th May 2013 - battery failed bleed test at Tesla workshop.

30th May 2013 - email from Tesla Service regarding repair on 13th May “While investigating your range concerns/carrying out the battery bleed test we noticed one of the battery monitoring boards was showing some issue, one of the functions of the BMB is communicate with the VMS (vehicle management system) to monitor the battery voltage on each sheet, then when commanded by the VMS the BMB will discharge individual bricks within the sheet in coordination with the other 10 BMB’s in order to maintain correct state of charge of all bricks within the battery. Hence, if one of these boards is not functioning correctly this could have a detrimental effect on the calculated range.”

30th May 2013 - email to Tesla Service “Brick 8 first showed up as the weakest performer on May 10th, 2011 and has been the weakest performer consistently since July 3rd, 2011. That brick has apparently been setting my CAC value all this time”

30th May 2013 - email from Tesla Service “The CAC value is not calculated solely on the value of the lowest brick, do you know which sheet was this information taken from?”

June - October 2013 - worked with Tesla Service trying different charging regimes but range problems persisted.

10th October 2013 - battery passed bleed test at Tesla workshop.

20th June - 20th August 2014 - car at Tesla workshop following breakdown.

5th July 2014 - email from Tesla Service “Completed a bleed scan. Battery is in good condition.”

5th July 2014 - email to Tesla Service “Can you provide some detailed results of the battery bleed test? I want to understand when the battery warranty would be invoked.”

7th July 2014 - email from Tesla Service “Unfortunately we cannot go into further detail with regards to the condition of the battery itself.”

10th July 2014 - email to Tesla Service “I have reviewed car logs from May 2010 to June 2014 and it’s clear that Brick 8 has been consistently the weakest performer and is apparently setting the CAC value.”

11th July 2014 - email from Tesla Service “Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We will immediately escalate this to our battery department to gain further insight”

15th July 2014 - email from Tesla Service “With regards to the battery information you have provided, there is clearly some degradation occurring within the pack. However we have checked and fundamentally there is no fault within the battery. The reduction in range you are experiencing is related to this, however with the mileage you have covered in the Roadster this is to be expected.”

15th July 2014 - I escalated this issue to Country Director for Tesla UK reminding him that “The battery pack has had problems with brick number 8 since at least February 2011”

15th July 2014 - email from Country Director for Tesla UK “Thanks for your email. I am checking with xxxx and the team and we will get back to you”

15th July 2014 - email from Tesla Service Management “I have been talking to our senior EU engineers regarding your battery concern. They will carry out further in depth analysis and report back to me as soon as possible.”

16th July 2014 - responded to request for more information from Tesla Service Management by providing complete log history and background data (again!)

26th July 2014 - email from Tesla Service “it’s probably best you can drive away in your Roadster. Firstly because currently we won’t be swapping out the battery pack, and secondly we are waiting on batteries for Roadsters that are ‘off-road’. We are in the midst of sourcing packs for them but currently I have been informed there is an extended lead time.”

15th August 2014 - email from Tesla Service Management “we have raised your concern to the battery engineering team in Deer Creek and they have reviewed the log data from your Roadster. The response from our senior manager of engineering is as follows:

We are responding to your questions about the condition of your lithium-ion battery for your Roadster. After a review of your vehicle’s historical log file and diagnostic data, we have determined that there has been no abnormal degradation with respect to your vehicle’s battery and that it is operating within normal operating parameters.

The battery pack design is a collection of batteries (“bricks”) tied together in series and they each retain capacity at varying rates. When we evaluate the rate of capacity retention for the battery pack, we are actually evaluating each brick individually and focus our attention on the lowest capacity brick. From one date to the next, we expect to find the same brick location identified as the lowest capacity brick. For your vehicle, we have evaluated the capacity retention of pack, focusing on the brick in question (referenced as #8) and found it to be operating within expectations.”

Can you/they not just swap out brick 8, as has been done on Nissan Leaf's to bring the "average of your whole pack" back to the "average of all Roadsters packs"? Or could you temporarily borrow a brick from another Roadster? (unless this will trash your warranty?)

That's an average battery capacity loss rate of 4.5% per year! Very surprised Tesla say that's normal (considering Roadster's have active battery temperature management) and that it's not therefore a fault covered by your very expensive extended Tesla warranty. That battery capacity loss rate per year is worse than a Nissan Leaf !!!

Amazingly well documented. Question: Can anyone in the UK rely confidently on Tesla's warranties?

This is the point, and presumably why Kevin has chosen to publicise this. Manufacturers do get very touchy when someone rubbishes their product, or after-sales service, on a publicly-accessible forum.

By way of comparison, friends of mine embarked on a round-the-world cycle camping expedition a few years ago and for accommodation they bought a Hilleberg Kaitum tent, costing over £1000. They needed this particular model because he's 6' 4". Hilleberg have (had) a fantastic reputation for producing lightweight tents of a very high quality, at a price. After only 60 or so days' travel the tent's zips started to fail. My friends, who are very well respected in the cycle touring community, invariably buy good quality stuff and review it on their blog at http://woollypigs.com. They did so with their tent and, after some initial wriggling and high-handed behaviour by Hilleberg US, telling them they had to clean the zips every day etc, eventually Hilleberg climbed down and replaced the tent.

I'd suggest that there are a lot more Hilleberg tents about than there are Teslas, but when a brand becomes "tainted" it can be very difficult for manufacturers to regain their reputations. From Kevin's description, any reasonable person can see that that battery performance is below what it should be. I'm a bit surprised that Tesla aren't being more accommodating as they are the undisputed market leaders in quality EVs and it's peanuts to them to replace the faulty cell(s). They have a lot to lose.

Indeed they do, given the rumours about the Model S drive trains needing to be repaired...

I am also hugely surprised at the way Tesla are handling Kevin's issue especially as he is a leading person in the EV community in the UK.

All I have heard from the Tesla Roadster owners I have met over the past 3.5 years that I have had my Leaf is how good Tesla treat their customers. In fact, I was so impressed that I wanted to work for them and applied (unsuccessful :( ). Kevin's experience has dented that opinion though. I would not be so enthusiastic to work for a company that charges £13k for a warranty and then quibbles over what to me seems a fairly low cost repair. In fact, given the amount of resources Tesla have already put into the investigations I wouldn't be surprised if the cost to date of those investigations is many times the cost of just replacing necessary parts. It just seems like they are trying to prove a point rather than having the customer's needs at heart.

This is the first sign I have seen that Tesla is starting to develop similar policies and way of working to the traditional manufacturers... I thought they were different and perhaps they still are but it is a slippery slope that could result in Tesla just becoming another manufacturer.

Tesla is a very new car company and I am pretty sure that their policies will evolve as they grow but to me this is not a good start and so Tesla, as a company, is starting to lose their "specialness".

Isn't that similar to the capacity loss experienced by Nikki Gordon Bloomfield for her Leaf after a similar number of miles and only 3 years?

Tesla Roadster has active battery temperature management and ought to suffer MUCH less capacity loss per year than any el-cheapo Leaf. Nikki's loss of 15% after more than 3 years and 50k miles seems to be a the worse case experience in the UK so far and possibly due to very high battery temperature (10 bars) upon occasion. Other 3 year old UK Leafs still have closer to 90% capacity, especially those in the climatically benign UK North-East...

Whereas Kevin's Roadster is down to 82% (unlike other UK Roadsters) due to a quite obviously defective brick #8. One can imagine puffed up cells, emitting PF5 gas, spontaneously combusting sometime soon (like happened in the Boeing Dreamliners)... Tesla behaviour here in the UK seems to be less than what is expected in the USA.

Are the roadster cells cobalt or manganese based? If the former then I would be worried from a safety perspective. If manganese (or ferrous based) then they are relatively stable and comparitively safe.

I'm really surprised by Tesla's obduracy for three reasons:

1) the Roadster was their flagship product, bought by affluent, connected people who are highly articulate on social media. How Tesla supports the Roadster is a leading indicator for prospective Model S, X and III buyers;
2) Tesla's own forum is full of effusive posts saying how great Tesla's after sales service has been
3) politically, by giving Kevin a hard time they are shooting themselves in the foot. As a leading advocate and maven for EVs, he's the sort of owner they should be pulling out the stops for due to his influence. It's clear that Kevin kept his worries about his car to himself until Tesla let him down over this issue.

AFAIK, they are lots and lots of old standard 18650 cells from various suppliers, such as Panasonic (wired together into bricks) but other suppliers, e.g. Sony, also make these standard LiPo batteries for a wide variety of electrical applications.

I agree 100% with all your 3 points above, but see the following link concerning Model S drive train replacements!

Kevin, As I wrote on TMC...

Fellow Roadster owners, I think the important thing here is the Roadster warranty specifically ignores battery degradation. Nissan did a great job here in defining what constitutes a warranty repair for battery degradation, aside from Kevin's specific issue... It is important for those of us that own Roadsters to know if it indeed is a BINARY case before Tesla will fix our Roadsters... Kevin has made the point (and I agree with his point) that under the current battery warranty, if the car can go 1 mile (or even 1/2 a mile) on the battery (as it is currently warranted) then Tesla has no obligation to repair the battery pack. Whilst I applaud the announcement of the 400 mile battery pack, seeing that Tesla will probably charge us for it, I would like to have the warranty for such a pack defined WITH battery degradation.

I bought a CPO because it was supposed to have a 37 month/37,000 mile warranty. Finding out that the battery portion of this warranty is not as covered as I expect is disappointing, to say the least.

Thanks – that's interesting. At the time of writing, there were 99 votes cast in the poll which doesn't actually look too bad in the context of 40,000 Model S sold over the past two years. It appears that Tesla has done the decent thing by replacing defective drive trains.

I guess the big unknown is whether those 99 cars will require further drivetrain replacements under warranty and whether Tesla has designed and implemented engineering changes to eliminate this issue.

All the more baffling that Tesla has played hardball with KS when replacing brick 8 in his Roadster would have 'hidden' the battery warranty issue.

@Kevin Sharpe Very sorry to hear of your troubles. If Tesla were just clear on acceptable degradation this would be much more straight forward. If that answer was 70% retention at 5 years you'd know where you stood :(

While I understand the sentiment that Kevin is very influential I don't think he should get special treatment as such, that's not really fair on everyone else, but I suspect they will regret this decision...

How many more cycles is it likely to be before brick 8 actually fails? I assume at that point the warranty will kick in? Have you asked for the cost to get that one brick replaced if you wanted to just get it done yourself?

Unfortunately, the battery warranty (and bumper to bumper warranty) specifically excluded battery degradation. Quite simply it is a BINARY case. FAIL/WORKING... (Thus the comment on 1 mile on earlier post).

Then I don't understand why Tesla spent any time on diagnostics whatsoever?

Until the range drops below what another manufacturer (eg. Nissan) would act at, I'm not sure there is much to get excited about here, whatever the small print says.

Tesla should be expected to do at least as well as Nissan, but I don't think it's fair to hold them up to much higher standards.

I think it is perfectly fair...

Tesla should be doing way much better than Nissan in this respect because their battery has a full TMS (Thermal Management System). The Leaf has no thermal management to speak of so I don't think we can use Nissan as a benchmark on battery performance and I would expect a much smaller reduction in percentage charge to trigger a warranty replacement/repair with Tesla than with Nissan.

This might change with the nV200 which I believe does have a battery TMS.
