Fascinating book with reference to solar powered electric car in Bradford on Avon ;)

THE BURNING ANSWER - A USER’S GUIDE TO THE SOLAR REVOLUTION by Keith Barnham

 In three generations we have used half the oil reserves generated by photosynthesis in eight million generations.

 In two generations we have used half the uranium reserves generated by nucleosynthesis in 250 million generations.

 The plutonium produced by the UK civil nuclear programme in two generations must be kept out of the environment and out of terrorist hands for more than 300,000 years.

 The peak wholesale price of daytime electricity in Germany is falling thanks to the sun.

 Many Laplanders have reduced their winter heating bills using stored solar energy.

When you consider that an hour’s worth of sunlight falling on the earth will supply the world’s energy demands for one year, Keith Barnham’s provocative, inspiring and passionately argued manifesto for solar power and renewable energy is a call to action.

Barnham answers the burning question of our age: how to supply the power our society demands while avoiding environmental catastrophe. The threat of global warming, oil depletion and nuclear disaster is ever-present because most of our energy is produced by burning unsustainable fuel. There is also a growing risk of environmental damage from fracking and shale-oil extraction, deforestation and drilling for fossil fuels in sensitive environments.

Barnham believes that we live in a ‘cusp civilisation’ precariously close to destroying itself as energy providers and politicians continue to exploit Einstein’s E = mc., the famous equation that led to the atomic bomb and is the key to both nuclear power and nuclear weapons.

Central to The Burning Answer is Einstein’s ‘other’ equation: E = hf. Barnham explains how this little-known equation, also discovered in 1905, started the quantum revolution that led to the semiconductor revolution that has brought us the laptop and the mobile phone. The equation is fundamental to the generation of electricity from sunlight and Barnham explains how the technology of the solar revolution based on E = hf can save us from global warming, oil depletion and blowing ourselves up with E = mc..

The science in The Burning Answer is easily comprehensible and provides us with answers in an accessible way to give the impetus and the resources to:

 understand the UK energy policy.

 stand up to the fossil fuel industry, climate change sceptics and the anti-renewables lobby.

 learn how far behind other countries the UK is, in harnessing solar energy to provide cheaper, low carbon, electricity.

 reduce our carbon footprint and energy bills.

 discover the technology being created to enable us to power cars from the sunlight falling on our roof-tops.

Keith Barnham is Emeritus Professor of Physics at Imperial College London. He started his research career in experimental particle physics working in research laboratories at CERN in Geneva and the University of California Berkeley. Mid-career he switched to researching solar energy and invented a solar cell with three times the efficiency of today’s roof-top panels. He lives with his wife, the poet Claire Crowther, in Somerset. He is involved with local groups concerned about flooding, fracking and the nearby nuclear reactors.

and blowing ourselves up with E = mc..

E=mc^2.

I think solar is definitely the way forwards. There are many technological breakthroughs in store, including quantum dots that harvest infrared energy and generate power at night.

nice review;

"Is there anything new to add to a debate that seems to have reached stalemate? The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has spoken again, but does anyone expect government policies or public opinion to change much as a result? Fortunately, Keith Barnham does have something new to say: he cuts through the current morass of fossil-fuel and nuclear lobbyists' negative propaganda with a clear and original vision for solar power."
