The joys of keyless entry .. and everything else

Last week my wife dropped me off at the train station (yes, there were trains back then), for me to catch an early morning flight for a business trip. I had settled into my journey when she texted to ask where the car key was. It was in my pocket!

She'd driven home and was looking for the front door key. Fortunately we have a key safe with a spare, and a spare car key indoors.

She didn't park or get out of the car, but presumably if she had, it would not have started again. This is a very easy mistake to make when you're just used to having the key in your pocket or bag. Solve one problem and it creates another!

My Audi A4 ICE will do this, but as soon as you walk away with the keys you get an alert on the dash warning you. Surprised the ID4 doesn't have a similar alert.
A lot of cars have built in warnings though. Mine will tell the people left in the car if I walk off whilst it's on that it's no longer detected. I know this from popping into Sainsbury's and it has key out of range on the dashboard with an audible bong too if you tried driving away.

Similar if you get out and turn off and leave the key inside and shut the door, you'll get a muffled bong from inside
The Mercedes’ throws a wobbly as soon as the key it has recognized for starting goes out of range with a dash warning and sound. The car keeps running but once stopped ie switched off will need a key to restart. So in the op case his wife would have had time to chase after him assuming she could park.

Our ID.4 issues a warning as soon as the key is taken out of the cabin, so it does have one.

Exactly, I find it strange that as soon as the OP got out of the car and started to walk away his wife missed the bing bong and warning message of no key.
I'd try this again at the safety of home when you get chance and make sure it's working properly.
our E niro wont drive if the key isnt in the cabin as far as I know although Ive never tested it. It comes up on the dash 'key not in car'

Both my leaf and ioniq do this but I suspect you could still drive them away if they'd been started.

It drives just fine while displaying the “key not present” message (along with a loud warning beep initially). I regularly park my car in our detached garage after my wife has taken the keys to unlock the door to the house without any issues other than the warning message and beep.
Thanks for the replies, we will test this again. We already have the SOS warning message permanently displayed (until my appointment with the dealer next month to look at it) but apparently there were no other warnings noticed. It has happened before when she dropped me off at the local shop then drove the 100 yards home without the key. I'm not aware of disabling any warnings.

The ID3 does.

I wonder if the SOS warning message being permanently displayed prevented the keyfob warning?
